Here we go, Manchester City v Wolves, City desperate for 3 points to apply pressure on the seemingly untrippable Arsenal, and Wolves desperate for a point or 3 to pull away from the premier league trap door. Results as they were yesterday afternoon, couldn’t have been much kinder for Wolves and definitely offers incentive to Lopetegui and his players. Nobody connected to Wolves will underestimate the task.
Apparently, The Citizens will select from a fully fit squad. Terrific! What’s more from reports, De Bruyne appears set for a return to the first 11 after a period starting on the bench. Even Haaland scored the other night too, in that excellent second half comeback against Spurs. Wolves to the slaughter or have City peeked too early in the week?!! Well, if Haaland scores tomorrow (unlikely, I know!!) it’ll be his 23rd of the season which would equal the Golden Boot winning total for the last 3 seasons. That is incredible.
But what about Wolves? Interesting times for sure. Craig Dawson’s signing has been confirmed this morning (but unavailable for selection) and of course Pablo Sarabia, an attacking midfielder, arrived at Molineux this week and is available to play. With our injury list well documented, it’s over to Lopetegui to pick his right combination …. will he play 3 centre halves and 2 wing backs or go for 4 at the back? Will he look to defend against Man City and counter or push on a little more? Whatever the line-up, it may well turn out to be the former for Wolves. Of our players, Neves has looked terrific of late, Bueno continues to impress, Collins / Toti / Kilman much more solid, Jimenez is showing signs and Cunha and Ait Nouri have been energetic. Changes are certain following that unedifying Molineux spectacle on national television on Tuesday night. That …. was REALLY awful. I can’t help thinking that if we keep trying to play it out from the back in a similar vane as v Liverpool (and others) then we are in for a heavy dose of punishment this afternoon. That tactic is becoming very tough to watch. A bit like the short corners …. please, lets try and get the ball in the box if we have bodies up there!
Nonetheless, in the interest of balance, the football since the World Cup ended (bar the cup replay) has been much improved and overall, Wolves have been a better side. Lopetegui, so far, has done a decent job. Points are what it’s all about however and whilst many may see the match at the Etihad as a ‘free hit’ (by which many mean ‘a lost cause’), I view it as a match we can go into with a realistic view of an upset. Why not? Sure, we’ll need a bit of luck … but why not?
Some statistics. In the last 4 league matches under Lopetegui, we’ve W2 D1 L1 which compares well to winning just two matches in the previous 22 league games. Sadly, we remain the lowest scorers in the premier league with just 12, and the lowest scorers after 19 matches have all been relegated in the past seven seasons. Time for change. For a good spell after our 2018 promotion, we caused Man City all sorts of problems, but we last beat them in December 2019 and since then have lost all 5 league encounters. To top it all, a loss will be our 1000th in top flight football. With all that to digest, there’s only one outcome – a Wolves win!
Today is my 51st anniversary of first seeing Wolves and for a little indulgent trip down memory lane, I have selected the programme of Wolves v Manchester City from April 1982 for the headline photo. A landmark match during my Wolves supporting life as it was the last time I ever stood in the old North Bank. It was a time when we were fighting against relegation (again) and whilst we did eventually drop to Division 2, on that particular day, we outplayed and beat Man City 4-1. Gray, Clarke, Hibbitt and Eves were the scorers with all 5 goals up the North Bank end! We’d have some of that today, wouldn’t we!
Today’s kick off is at 2pm, though Sky are not screening us which is unfortunate. Commentary is available on BBC 5Live. Disappointing result but not entirely unexpected against a top team. More important matches lie ahead and there were green shoots of recovery evident in players xyz. We go again in the relentless cycle of never winning anything but " improving".

Traore puts City to the sword once again and Raul produces the final blow as Wolves completely dominate City with flawless performance. Early red card for de Brune didn't help the City cause but who cares.

David Coote is our referee today, with Darren England on VAR duty, so at least Mike Dean and Graham Scott won't be anywhere near any decision making!
I'm just hoping for a really positive performance from our lads today, hoping they will be strong at the back, and as Ivy has said, not pi$$ about trying to play out from the back in dangerous situations, and that Adam and Hwang will show their worth and feed Raul so he can do his best to score.
It's highly unlikely we will come out of the game with anything, but we can only hope for a repetition of 2019!!!

How Jimenez starts I've no idea, the penny will drop eventually for JL. I'm out and about with no intention of giving up my day to hunt for flickering streams showing a foregone conclusion. I await the match reports at FT although I have prepared one already which can be used.

Wolves attacking out of their half as the whistle goes. It’s been a matter of strong and well organised defence by Wolves to stem the City tide, which sadly only lasted 30 minutes before almost inevitably DeBruyne put the ball on Haarland’s head and a good header put them in the lead. Collins has defended very well and Jose has been absolutely solid in goal. We haven’t had any touches in their box yet but are attacking when we can. No poor performances by any our players to my knowledge.Today’s substitutions will be interesting!!

Have been listening to the radio over the last 5-10 minutes. Sounds like a comprehensive defeat, aided and abetted by two second half errors. Would I be right that the hat trick goal was due to a dreadful attempt at playing it from the back? If so, arrrrrrrrrggg.

You would be exactly right Ivy - it was a lazy and sloppy pass out by Jose easily intercepted by Mahrez.

Great play by Pod to set up a chance which Sarabia lashes wildly over the bar. This time he puts the ball in and it’s cleared for a corner. Joao puts it over but Max heads it well over

Nunes gets a shot away but it’s blocked and that’s the last action of today’s game. A very poor result from Wolves point of view, particularly in the second half conceding a soft penalty and a ridiculously sloppy goal after a pathetic pass out by Jose Sa. Few of our players really impressed - Collins had a good game and Pod did well after coming on. Sarabia was average as was Nunes, but I’m still waiting to see some promise from Cunha. Just the game we didn’t need today, and let’s hope JLo will be able to do some good work with the squad over the next two weeks before we face L’pool again.

What a surprise.. people need to get away from the great tactical manager beliefs. There is no such thing, all the successful managers have spend hundreds of millions of pounds to bring quality into the clubs they have been at. Mourinho was heralded as one of the greatest of all time, but he had budgets of Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan in seria A. He has been at Roma sometime with a budget well below the top teams and currently 16 points adrift of the top. JL is no better than Dyche tactically despite the hysterics on here, the difference is being able to identify quality players and being better at it. The idea that JL is communicating these novel tactical ideas to players when he can barely speak English to 11 guys kicking a ball aound is hilarious TBH. The main hope is his player recruitment.. no amount of tactical training will ever get goals from Jimenez or pace from Moutinho and strength from Podence.
Take the so called great managers of Klopp, PEP , Mourinho away from big budget teams and the results fall off a cliff.

Awful performance, a stroll for city, bet they can't believe how easy it was.
Haaland is a great striker but even he wouldn't score in our team, we just don't create enough.
Some bad mistakes from our lot, we ain't great at playing out from the back are we, that sa mistake has been coming.
J-lo deserves the freedom of Wolverhampton if he keeps this lot up, not sure some of these players have what it takes for a relegation scrap. Dont understand why podence didnt start the game adama just doesnt look interested. Worried after watching that garbage.

JL has weeks/months during the world cup for "good work". You can't polish a turd, the good work will be shipping much of the crap' out ASAP and replacing them with better players.

Managed to get a good stream on streambuddy live just a shame that the football was barely worth watching. Created all our own problems and the insistence we have to play out from the back always invites immediate pressure and subsequently we fail to move forward and end up losing possession or booting it aimlessly up field. It is just as well that JL has insisted that the squad get fitter as we do seem to be chasing the ball more than we actually have possession of it. Very few players came out of this match with much credit, Hugo did well as did Collins and l think Lemina added something to the midfield but really cannot seem to find much positive to say about any of the others..
To JL credit he does seem content to make reasonable substitutions in good time and they do make some difference, sadly not enough difference today.
Ah well, Liverpool next.

Whilst I agree with some of your points Angry - particularly about Mourinho - I don’t entirely agree! Whilst managers like Guardiola do have the financial backing to enable them to attract the top players they still have to manage them, and the excesses of their behaviour, as Ten Hag had to with the Ronaldo circus. Guardiola left Phil Foden out of the City squad today citing that he wasn’t match fit as opposed to being injured. Arsenal have been sitting at the top of the Prem just about the whole season with a squad that Arteta almost entirely had last season, and it does seem as though the players have bought into his ideas and are playing the way he wants them to.
A couple of other examples are Luke Shaw whose career would have been ended had Moutinho stayed at Old Trafford, but newer managers have seen what he has to offer and he is now a regular first team player.
Nuno saw the potential in Coady and moved him to central defence, turning him from an average midfielder/right back into the best central defender we have had for a long time.
We are now at the point where we can only hope JLo knows what he wants from his squad in general, and his players individually and is able to bring it out of them as the rest of the season progresses.

Some fair points Cheshire, but Arteta has spent 156 million this season bringing in Jesus for 52 million, Fabio Viera for 35 million etc so hardly chicken feed. You cite man management as integral for managerial success...I agree 100%, my point related to tactics. Motivation and man management are the 2 most important aspects of management as we saw when Mourinho was at Chelsea after the physio incident. He lost the dressing room and lost enough matches to be sacked regardless of the same tactics. Alex ferguson himself said tactics are overrated and it was much more down to dressing room dynamics and recruitment.. who can argue with probably the best manager of all time. If you look at any manager team talk they are all variations of the usual cliches " Close players down, keep it tight the first 15, play for the shirt etc.
Many wolves fans seem to believe JL will bring some kind of superior tactical masterplan to see us claimbing the table. It's a myth promoted by sky so they can have hours of waffle with their daft diagrams trying to convert a simple game into a chess match. Nuno converted Coady into a central defender but also spent 35 million on Fabio Silva and 20- 25 million on Cutrone. Without Fosuns investment with or without Nuno we would still be in the championship at best. No manager or club will ever achieve sustained success without spending a small country's GDP on players as tactics are largely irrelevant compared to player quality.
Many wolves fans seem to believe JL will bring some kind of superior tactical masterplan to see us claimbing the table. It's a myth promoted by sky so they can have hours of waffle with their daft diagrams trying to convert a simple game into a chess match. Nuno converted Coady into a central defender but also spent 35 million on Fabio Silva and 20- 25 million on Cutrone. Without Fosuns investment with or without Nuno we would still be in the championship at best. No manager or club will ever achieve sustained success without spending a small country's GDP on players as tactics are largely irrelevant compared to player quality.

Infact it would be fair to say bar a few freak egs, every manager has ultimately been sacked during their career proving the point. If some managers had "superior tactics" to others, they would be able to implement them at whatever club they were at, but clearly they can't. The reason they succeed at some clubs and not others is down to motivation levels, dressing room morale and having different budgets on transfers and wages. Even ferguson himself was on the verge of the sack and Wenger continually criticised during the latter part of his reign at Arsenal. How many managers in the last 50 years have proven to be successful continually moving to different clubs? The closest is possibly Pep at city where they still haven't won the champions league having spent literally billions of pounds with the backing of some of the richest men on the planet.

The fact you are comparing budgets of sevilla and Burnley thinking similar standard of players at both clubs illustrates my opinion of you a few years back was right Risca. As I said, there is no proof a manager at huge clubs is tactically better than 1 at Burnley..keep dribbling though

A disappointing result today. I think we've all seen recently that the playing it out from the back was a pretty wobbly tactic, and Sa in particular look uncomfortable with it.
So those chickens have come home to roost, but better being caught out in a match which we were unlikely to win anyway, rather than against teams outside the top 4.
The new manager still has his work cut out with team selection and motivation. I pretty much agree with angry on this - Julen has to get selection, role clarity, effort, motivation, and team spirit right before thinking about the luxury of tactical tweaks. He has to get the team in a place where tactics start playing a role.

What has been impressive since Jlo arrived is the commitment and determination of the players, a far cry from the lethargic approach under Lage. This would suggest that he has been able to motivate the players and once the new additions have settled in and he knows his best starting eleven for different situations we will hopefully see an improvement in the points tally.

To clarify, JL has a good cv, I'd sooner have him over Dyche based on his relative success, but I don't believe it is down to tactics.

No it isn't, you were mocking Dyche based on the fact his " only " accomplishments were keeping Burnley in the prem for numerous years. If you put JL or any of these supposedly top managers in charge of Burnley with their transfer/ wage budget I doubt they would do any better.

Many football fans ( not referring to anyone here specifically) are fairly thick. Look at Nuno as one eg- heralded as the greatest manager Wolves have had in 50 years which based purely on results and league positions would be correct. You then compare him with McCarthy who is viewed as a joke figure.. thick Mick with the yorkshire accent and a tactical board which had "WIN" on it for tactics. Nuno got wolves promoted spending 10 times what McCarthy did and brought established portugese internationals into the team leading us to two 7th places and 13th. McCarthy also won the championship like Nuno under Morgan/Moxey spending chicken feed and led wolves to 15th/ 17th place before being sacked the next season. There were no portugese internationals.. just "hidden gems" from the lower league where a marquee signing was an Eggert Johnson type. Pound for pound spent, there is a case for McCArthy having achieved more yet one is a demi God, the other is a figure of fun working for pathetic owners.

A supposedly "great tactician" Conte arrives with spurs current record of 10 wins 3 draws and 7 defeats. Not a huge difference yet one is hopeless and the other is a great manager. Many football fans witter on about formations, but they don't understand what they're seeing which suits media stations as dopey Dave can phone in on a Saturday night p*ssed out of his tiny mind saying he favours 4-4-3 instead of 4-4-2 and the manager needs to go etc etc. The only time results pick up is when players change, bar the honeymoon period of increased motivation which sets in often for a few weeks with new managers. There is no superior tactic to any other. There is no superior tactical manager to any other. There is no evidence with the same budget and same players the likes of McCArthy and Dyche are inferior to Conte and JL. Reputations count however which is why Conte is still spurs manager and why JL will be labelled a tactical genius if he spends 100 million keeing wolves in the prem when supposedly "sh*t" managers did for a tenth of that sum.
