Match Thread: Liverpool FC vs Wolves

Back Here Again
By Wolves
March 1 2023

Wolves travel to Anfield this evening for their second visit of the season, following the infamous FA Cup third round game where Wolves were robbed of a win by VAR.

Having subsequently lost the FA Cup replay Wolves then went on to an unexpected but resounding defeat of Liverpool 4 weeks ago. However anyone who thinks tonight's match will end in the same scoreline may be underestimating the pressure the reds are under to start getting some positive results. Their 0 - 0 draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday has been described as "watching a newly painted wall dry", which they will surely wish to bounce back from, however it can also be presumed that Wolves will go all out to prove their worth and get some justice for the debacle last time they played at Anfield.

Liverpool are constantly featuring in the press over the level of injuries they are carrying, with the latest concern relating to Darwin Nunez who has a should problem, but Diogo Jota has recently returned from a lengthy injury absence and is likely to be keen to re-establish his scoring record against his old club. Virgil Van Dyke has also returned to strengthen their defence, although Gomez, Matip and Konate may be doubtful starters.

After having to leave the Craven Cottage pitch on a stretcher during last Friday's game there was a concern that Matheus Cunha may have sustained a bad ankle injury, but it appears that scans have ruled this out and he may be able to continue his partnership in attack with Raul Jimenez which looked to be promising at Fulham, with Raul acheiving an assist in Pablo Serabia's goal. The other bit of good news is that Pedro Neto has completed another game with the Under 21's and may well be able to be involved in this game after a frustratingly long absence through injury. There doesn't appear to be any other injury concerns other than the long standing absentees. Bearing in mind that we also face Spurs at Molineux on Saturday which is a quick turnaround, there may be some rotation involved in tonight's game.

Tonight's mtach is due to kick off at 8pm, and, as it was originally scheduled to be a 3pm Saturday game without TV coverage, the rules state that it will not be televised today either - bizarrely!  Our referee will be Paul Tierney who was also in charge for the recent Molineux defeat of the Reds and had a very good game. He will be assisted on VAR by Stuart Atwell.

This board will do its best to provide regular updates on the progress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

Matheus Cunha doesn't make it into the squad (but will hopefully be fit for Sat), but Pedro Neto is on the bench. Raul leads the line again. Line-up:

Strong lineup for Liverpool too.
Van Dyke returns, let's hope that he is a bit rusty and off the pace.

Klapp mentioned also having Jota back to his best (trying to spook us?).
Happy for a point this time around.

I’m in the midlands and happy that, given a fair wind, I might have uninterrupted BBC WM commentary.

Not sure Moutinho and Neves is the way forward any more, having said that it was Moutinho’s great tackle helped to set up the fine 3rd goal at Molineux. Let’s see. The radio preview is describing how the circumstances and teams selected for all 3 recent Wolves v Liverpool matches have been so different, so it’s difficult to draw absolute pre match conclusions. If we play anything like matches 1 and 3, then we have a fighting chance versus an under pressure opposition.

Good break by Salah and Bajcetic lucky to get a shot away but no problem to Jose. Joao brings a save out of Allison then Pablo nearly gets his head on to the corner but just too high.

Matheus steals the ball and puts it over but it eludes Raul & Pablo sadly. Good pass by Elliott to try & find a Salah earns a corner which ends up with Jose

Good interception by Jota to Nunez whose cross is met by Elliott but he heads wide when he should have scored. Lemina hurt his hand in a tab

Wolves lose the ball in midfield, played through to Nunez on the left, great cross,
Elliot should score puts it wide.

Worryingly Lemina injured in the build up to that chance.

Looks like he’ll be okay and comes back on

Elliot cant find the net after the best two chances Liverpool had go astray. But he deserves an Oscar nomination for his antics after the high kick from Mouthino missed him by about three feet

Bit of a rash challenge on Tsimikas by Pablo gets him a yellow card then the whistle goes for half time. A pretty dull affair really but awoken have stood their corner in midfield and defence and attacked whenever possible, but in truth both teams have offered little real threat. Reds should really be in the lead but Jose has been solid. Nunes looks superb in control at times and Lemina and Ruben have been very good in midfield.

Bad tackle by Sarabia at the end gives him a deserved yellow.

After a good feisty start the match faded a bit. Certainly our attacking forays did. Having said that it’s a decent, hard working away performance with a seemingly stout and organised defensive unit.

The one big chance was that of Elliot who should have directed his header in the net, at least goal bound, but he let us off. Overall, not bad from Wolves. I’d take a point now, if pushed.

Dreadful refereeing decision.
RAN drags the ball back on the line, prevents a goal
Kick, through in on his own in the Liverpool box and the ref blows that the ball went out. It did not.

Better attacking intent from Wolves this half

All over and a disappointing result after a clean sheet at half time. Two well taken goals for L’poo, and the best summary I can offer is that the home team never looked at risk of losing to us, or even conceding in fairness. Some difficult games ahead of us against Spurs and Newcastle& we will have to hope we have learned from this game.

That’s it then.

Liverpool 2-0 Wolves.

Very disappointing end to the match with, overall, our lack of significant and sustained attacking football being at the forefront of my mind yet again. Yes, away to Liverpool, but if we can’t score, we can’t possibly win.

Quite a decent defending display for long periods but found wanting particularly for their second goal, they had us in shreds for that one..

Kilman and Dawson looked okay.

Another night to forget.

If the wrong sides win their matches in hand (and a big swing in goals) we could be perilously close to the drop zone yet again.

Molineux and Spurs next. They lost to Blades in the cup tonight and will surely want to bounce back themselves. Will be tough.

we Didn't look like scoring all night and that's been our problem all season, we just don't score enough goals.
Liverpool looked really fragile first half but we never tested them.
All the money we spent in January and we still don't have the fox in the box that can finish chances although we didn't create nothing for the strikers tonight, got to feel sorry for raul what can he do when he's feeding on scraps.
It's going to be a real battle to stay up and we need to show more fight than we did in the second half tonight!

Surely a manager of JLs standing will see what Raul is, a waste of a shirt and drop him before we drop into the championship. A waste of a shirt again.

Re: Match Thread: Liverpool FC vs Wolves

I'd start Traore upfront, he can't finish his dinner but none of our " strikers" can either. He would offer pace, strength and the ability to run at defences causing problems instead of standing like a statue as Raul does. I still think we will probably stay up, but the 2 points LOST against Fulham and the defeat to Bournemouth could prove decisive.

As I said, Traore will always he more dangerous than a post injury Raul. He has pace and strength which is priceless at any level regardless of at times a poor end product.
