Match Thread: Brighton & Hove Albion vs Wolves

A Tough Ask
By Wolves
April 29 2023

After the delight for Julen Lopetegui of completing three home victories - with clean sheets to boot - he must take his team to the South Coast today for a considerable challenge against one of the stand out teams outside the Top Four this season

Brighton  seem to have an enviable knack of recruiting good managers who suit their style, and unearthing good players who few of us have ever heard of, who go on to have a huge impact in the Premier League. Of course they even have a World Cup 2023 winner within they playing ranks!! Fans will surely recall the home game aginst Brighton in November when newboy Kaoru Mitoma gave Nelson Semedo a dog's life until the latter brought him down in the area and was sent off, before Wolves went on to lose 3-2. However things have picked up since then and since the arrival of our new management team, and perhaps we can be more positive about today's game, especially as - most unexpectedly - Brighton lost 3 - 1 at Nottingham Forest!

Julen Lopetegui has declared that there are no new injury concerns, so the squad for Tuesday's game are all available for this game. He has made changes for today's game by bringing Joao Gomes into a four man midfield and - at last - starting Pedro Neto up front alongside Diego Costa with Hwang and Cunha dropping to the bench. Jimenez and Ait-Nouri still fail to make it into the squad as does Jonny.

The game is due to kick off at 3pm and will not be televised. Our referee will be David Coote with Tony Harrington on VAR duty.

This board will hope to post regular updates on the progress of the game. Board members and visitors are encouraged to post their own observations and opinions and to join in the conversation - at any point.

A tough afternoon ahead although l think the team can rise to the occasion and give a good account of ourselves. Spirits will be high so let's hope we take the game to them and come away with something.

I must say I like the line-up and think it gives them a chance to make a name for themselves, especially our midfield four.

MacAllister and Mitoma amongst five players dropped to the bench by Di Zerbi. TV suggesting Nunes will return to the right wing with Neto on the left wing for Wolves which sounds sense

Clever goal by Brighton with a flick on along the ground by Welbeck for Undav to tap in. A close thing for offside but seems likely to be OK

Great run by Nunes into the area is stopped because of a ‘coming together’ between Webster & Costa, checked by VAR but OK.

Urgh. Still a fairly novel situation to go a goal down so early. Patience, but combined with loads of energy required I think.

Welbeck found in the area unmarked, Jose blocks his shot then the offside flag goes up, which may have been wrong. We are no match for BHA so far

Costa is getting no service whatsoever so far. Nunes is having a nightmare game. Lemina puts a high centre in which beats Steele but can’t capitalise. Dawson takes some control in defence. Neto makes a poor pass, and a high cross is put into our area for Welbeck to head in from close order at the base of Jose’s near post. Our goal difference is taking a hammering

Half time and a dreadful first 45 for Wolves brought to an end. We have had no answer to Brighton’s skilful and accurate play. Far too many poor passes especially from Nunes giving possession to Brighton which have led to well taken goals. Costa has hardly touched the ball due to lack of service. Neto has made a good effort on the wing but they have struggled against a well organised defence. JL will give them the Bells of Shannon now and let’s hope we get a respectable result although it’s unlikely, an amazing considering Di Zerbi made 5/changes to his team!!

Gilmour unlucky to shoot just wide after an excellent build up by Brighton. Their left back Estonian jogs past our defence, receives the ball and puts it just wide. Nunes doing quite well at right back now, but still 13 minutes plus AT to play. Podence brings out a good save from Steele.

Mistake by Webster gives possession toHwang, but he can’t even bring a save from Steele. Full time whistle blows and a sodding awful afternoon for Wolves comes to an end. We came up against a team who belong in a higher league!! We had no answer to their slick play and gave them all the opportunities they needed to score. The worst away score I can remember for a long time and I’m getting tired of seeing Jose Sa make stupid passes when he has possession which give goals away against us - perhaps time to give Bentley his chance in goal. Good to see Neto back and he did his best to attack but with no success. Not looking forward to MOTD tonight!!

I know Brighton are our Bogey side but that was totally unacceptable and embarrassing.
The players should hang their heads in shame that was awful.
The fans need refunding out of the players pockets after that shambles.
The away form has been dreadful this season.

Reading this thread is like reliving a nightmare! An unacceptable performance from the team, Brighton gave a good hiding which our general play and effort fully deserved. Brighton had verve and energy and enthusiasm, everything that we didn’t. We would have lost today whatever but having said that we created so many of our own problems. From Sa and his attempts to make cute little pathetic passes from the back and to Nunes finding a man in blue and white with regularity. After a totally sh!te first half Collins, having come on at HT wanted to get in on the action within 3 minutes and gifted them the 5th.

A joke of a performance but to be fair versus a very capable and thoroughly decent opposition. We should be aiming to emulate them. In amongst the chaos some very good goals.

Not an easy watch at all, lovely bloke sat next to me but as he left he wished me all the best and hoped we stay up so they could collect another guaranteed 6 points next season. Ouch. Harsh but fair. Completely, utterly, totally 2nd best.

I was miserable that I thought this was the worst defeat I’d seen as an attending Wolves fan. In fact It depressed me somewhat, so imagine my surprise and a touch of morbid happiness to remember I’d been here before , that is the 0-6 many years ago at home v Southampton. We could have won that one all those years ago ….. not today, we were shocking.

Villa next week

I wasnt planning on posting till next season, but hard to ignore 6-0. There basically isn't anything to play for, we won't go down so all games are dead rubbers. People say Fulham have had a great season in 10th but the difference between finishing 17th and 10th is nothing so why bother. The players should bother as they are paid to care and for fans who attended like Ivy, but the reality is a club that finishes 8th will have no advantage to one 17th bar a few quid placement money. It's why unless you are chasing silverware, it can be incredibly boring every year.

Regarding JL, we were an inconsistent team before he came , and an inconsistent one now. There haven't really been any improvements..fluke wins over palace and beating Lampards chelsea who couldn't beat an egg arent evidence of anything. We will finish next season like this, mid table incapable of winning anything and drifting along taking the sky prem money.
