Match Thread: Wolves vs Manchester City

A Tough One
By Wolves
September 30 2023

Another difficult challenge at Molineux faces Wolves this afternoon as the Premiership Champions Manchester City come calling, and a difficult challenge to write any positive prelude to the game on here.

Wolves have certainly had a very challenging start to the new season, playing Brighton, Liverpool and now City at home and already having played four games away from home, and this has proved difficult for the squad, hence only having four points on the board so far. Quite a lot of 'anti O'Neil' sentiment has sprung up on social media since the last two results at Luton and Ipswich, but the club appear to continue backing him in his position. The Ipswich game game him an opportunity to field squad members who haven't played many times this season and some of the new recruits who will be wanting to stake a claim for starting places.

No new injury problems have been declared for today's game, but of course John-Ricner Belleguard will sit out his second of three matches due to suspension after his dismissal at Luton, and Tommy Doyle is ineligible as he is on loan from City. Boubakar Traore was one of the few players to receive a positive review after the midweek game and may have done enough to step into a midfield vacancy. The conundrum however still relates to who should be employed as strikers in the team. Pedro Neto appears to be finding the form we have all been hoping would return after his dreadful run of injuries, and Hee Chan Hwang has at least found the net a few times already, so they are likely to start. Whilst being a good runner with the ball from midfield Matheus Cunha otherwise flatters to deceive in front of goal, and Fabio Silva and Sasa Kalajdzic are still definitely trying to find their feet in the Premier League.

The truth is that whatever starting Xl is fielded by Wolves they will have a very difficult afternoon ahead of them with the power and skill City continue to display ahead of them, and a team wanting to continue their run of winning all their opening league games so far. Last season Wolves fell to a 3 - 0 home defeat after having centre back Nathan Collins dismissed at 0 - 1 for a reckless foul on Grealish, so we hope we can keep eleven players on the pitch this afternoon!!

Wolves fans will also be hoping not to suffer any further highly debatable refereeing decisions after the match at Luton. The experienced Craig Pawson - who also refereed our game at Everton - will be in charge this afternoon with Robert Jones on VAR Duty

The game will kick off at Molineux at 3pm and will not be screened before the highlights are shown on MotD.

This board will endeavour to provide regular updates depending on available resources, whilst members and visitors are encouraged to post their opinions and join in the conversation.

Tough day at work for the squad today and all sensible indicators suggest a victory for City. However, if all the players play for shirt and put a good shift in that's probably the best we can hope for.
Sa will probably be earning his new contract this afternoon.
But as always, fingers crossed, stranger things have happened.

BBC have us down as 3/5 at the back. Semedo still gets the nod over Doc and Cunha still up front. One day, he will score a goal.

Loads of reasons to feel distraught before the match kicks off. We are only 13/2 for the win, when we beat them a few seasons ago we were 11/1. The difference being, under Nuno, I actually felt we'd got a chance of winning ... and we did, despite the price. And I won £110. My feelings aren't directed at O'Neil either, more a comment on the state of the club in general.

Hoping for a miracle, they do happen every once in a while.

Dave Edwards doing the Peacock commentary and not sounding very positive. Jeff Shi next to Robert Plant in the box, both looking pretty bleak! Watching this one from the comfort of home after last year being in th Graham Hawkins watching Collins doing his idiot Kung Fu lunge.

Great to see Nunes get the reception he deserves. Would love to be there, if only to add to the howls of disapproval. A complete Sh!!te of a player.

Meanwhile today, BBC reporting how well we are doing v City, controlled defending is the phrase being used. Anyone watching disagree.

Hwang catches Walker in the area but a genuine attempt to get the ball. City players asking forca secind yellow for him but nothing given. Gomez gives a free kick away 25 yds out which is headed by Dias straight at Jose.
Half time whistle goes and an excellent day for Wolves so far with Pedro Neto capping a fine run by deflecting a shot in off Dias. Jose Sa hasn’t had a serious save to make so far, although City still of course look dangerous. The five man defence seems to be coping very well woth Lamina and Gomez giving good cover ahead of them. Cunha has done some solid work through the middlevand Neto and Hwang have worked hard down the wings. Can they kerp,it up though??

Cunha crocked by Dias but nothing given. Doku passes to Alvarez but a weak shot collected by Jose. Cunha stopped on the edge of their area claiming a free kick but nowt given. At the other end a foul given against Gomez and a yellow card to Neto for dissent. Free kick on the edge of our area which Alvarez puts straight into the top corner brilliantly

Every Wolves player contributed brilliantly, and Haarland gas less than ten touches of the ball. Great pkay by Neto and Hwang to get our goals.

We rode our luck, but we have had plenty of the other kind recently.
Just one disappointment; by the time Grealish got on we had used up all our boos on spoilt-brat Nunes

Well it's safe to say no one on the board saw that coming, everyone in the prediction league predicted a wolves hammering so the table will stay the same with Chicago and friends in the relegation zone.

I don't do knee jerk reactions, we best city and United ( who were then top of the league in the 03/04 season when we finished bottom). I was at both games, the proof in the pudding is where we are after 38 games, not freak results like this. Normal service will probably resume against Villa next week but always good to beat the oil rig

Brighton conceding 6, goes to show anyone can beat anyone else on a given day.

What's MOTM?
Manager Of The Month . And he looks like finishing the month still in his job, which might have been uncertain if it had gone badly.

What a sport football can be. Doldrums one minute, joyous the next. It simply is the best sport going, the unexpected can happen, and does. Sadly I didn’t back us. Should have.

Plenty of plaudits from the journo’s for this Wolves performance today, and why not. When they do well, fantastic, even Pep has come out and said it how he saw it, they failed cope with our counter attack and couldn’t break the defence down.

I am unashamedly overjoyed this evening, I was pacing around the house like some deranged …. I don’t know what ….. praying for the final whistle, thumping the air when it did arrive. Nobody gave the team a chance today, including me, just couldn’t see it, thank goodness the players and O’Neil don’t throw in the towel and quick as some of us fans.

Nevertheless, we have to keep composure and look at the matches coming up, starting with next week for Villa, a real tough one, especially with such an awful score line at Villa Park earlier today. However, I will be enjoying this feeling tonight and for a few days to come in the meantime and in the interim to next Sunday. Additionally a positive comment for O’Neil, who clearly got it right today. It must be a real confidence boost for all, I hope so.

A deserved win then, who’d have thought it. Well done Wolves!!

What a great win that nobody saw coming.
A great battling performance from the boys.
Still in salou so watched the game in a bar again.
The mancs fans were saying it would be a cricket score before the game, they were a little quiet at ft though😂😂

I must admit, I was expecting a bit more enthusiasm
Post match gentlemen, and I'm a glass is half empty type. We have just beaten arguably the best team on earth 😐🧐 In the words of Delia..where are you ?

I’m here!

Good to see such positive comments on MOTD this evening. It was always going to be tough today, but the team selection and shape (especially at the back), and the shear determination of the players and pace up front combined to a brilliant, and lets face it, crucial win. Fantastic stuff.

Nice to see Dawson getting a special highlight on MOTD showing his very capable and competent contribution this afternoon.

Massive effort from all the players and deservedly got their much needed victory. Having previously been concerned that GON was starting to lose the dressing room I must admit that the commitment shown tends to indicate the opposite. One swallow doesn't make a summer but it may herald better things to come. Well done lads a brilliant three points let's have a repeat next week.

Well now, who would have thought it.... just as I was beginning to lose hope. I dont know why, but I have taken to this manager and really feared that he would become the scapegoat.
That performance yesterday (and I only saw highlights on Match of the day) was very encouraging, yes City had the majority of play but we handled it well. What we need now is for everyone to get behind the Manager , I think he deserves that.
