Match Thread: Sheffield United vs Wolves

'Channy'
By Wolves
November 4 2023

Wolves travel to Bramall Lane, Sheffield this afternoon in search of another 3 points to boost their Premier League position against the promoted team Sheffield United, who are still looking for their first win of the season.

Hwang Hee Chan - or 'Channy' as it seems he is known within the squad has been the focus of much attention since last weekend's game against Newcastle, after he gave away a penalty which should have been overturned by VAR, before scoring an excellent second goal to draw the match. The fact that Pedro Neto is now out injured for the next few weeks may well put more demand upon Chan to continue his current scoring level. No doubt there will be much speculation as to who will start in place of Neto, and whether head coach Gary O'Neil will continue with three up front by bringing in Kalajdzjic or whether he will put an extra man - Belleguarde (back from injury) or the impressive Tommy Doyle - who spent last season on loan at United - in midfield.

Sheffield United have played well in some of their games - they kept Man City at bay for much of their game before conceding a winner - but have struggled to score many goals.  They have suffered dreadfully with injuries since the beginning of the season as well as losing two of their better players during the close season, but they will surely see today's game as an oppotunity to get some points on the board, and it's likely to be a close run game.

Referee Anthony Taylor has been relegated ton the Championship  this weekend following his penalty decision at Molineux last week, yet remarkably VAR man Jarred Gillet will still be on VAR duty for the Fulham v Man United game!!

Our referee for today's game will be Robert Jones - who sent Mario Lemina off against Villa - supported on VAR duty by Chris Kavanagh.

Today's game will kick off at 3pm and will not be screened on TV before MotD.

This board will do it's best to post regular updates on the progress of the match, and visitors and board members are encouraged to join in the conversation by posting their own observations and opinions.

Two changes for today's starting Xl with Kalajdzic replacing Neto and Doyle coming in for a well deserved first start instead of Traore. Line-up:

Doyle was great when he came on. Sasa is deserved but let’s see if he is ready (fingers crossed).
Sheff U will get a win against someone, sometime, won’t they? Hopefully not us today.

Afternoon All. A minute’s silence to be held pre-remembrance day, and very nicely observed by all there.
Blades to kick off.

RAN has been fouled twice already the another tasty challenge on Chan. Fine break up right wing by Cunha and his ball across the area just evades Sasa

Another foul this time on Doyle for a set piece, Doyle outs a good ball over but Lemina is offside. Free kick to Blades 15 yds outside our area cleared by Max

Semedo & Chan attack up right side, exchange balls until Semoefo shoots over the bar. Their keeper puts the ball in to touch but we can’t take advantage.

Good play by Chan in their area eventually getting a corner put in at speed by Doyle but we’ll defended.

A period of pressure from Utd end when Sasa is fouled. Baldock fouls Sasa again, resorting to strong arm stuff and gets a yellow card. Free kick to be out in by Doyle & punched out by keeper.

Chan feeds Cunha in the box and his shot is tipped over for a corner, Sasa has blood on his face needing attention first. Cleared. Chan gets a very soft free kick15 yds out, Sasa back on the pitch. Tommy Doyle puts free kick well over the bar

Handball given against Toti although his arm was by his side!! Excellent playin the area by Chan and he passes to Sasa but RAN gets t9 it first and hits it wide!

RAN ends up in front of the goal again but tries passing rather than shoot. All the possession is with Wolves at present. Semedo gets the ball into the area and we still can’t get a shot away!

Max puts a good ball in for Sasa but he’s offside. Brewster tangles with Toti & comes off worst, & sits down by the sideline, so Tommy Doyle pits the ball out so he can be seen to. Brewster replaced by McAtee. Into added time

Half time whistle goes and it’s pretty much as most of us would probably have sxpected. Wolves have done quite well carving out several chances but failed to convert, but at the other end they have been solid and comfortable in defence. Wolves have had 60% possession and now need the killer bite.

Half time 0-0 and Wolves clearly the better, more fluid and confident team. Sasa, Hwang and Semedo all getting forward but not sharp enough in the box. Tommy D tried a long range blaster but it went really high..
You would think we are favourite 🤞

Utd breakand take a shot fro outside area which goes just over the bar, then Jose gives the ball back to them & needs rescuing.

Dawson trips McAtee just outside the area & gets a yellow card. Free kick in a dangerous position but McAteevputs it too high

Utd have started second half best & have their first corner but wasted. Long throw put in which rebound off Sasa for another corner which RAN puts out for a throw in.

Poor pass by Sasa leass to another long throw in, which Toti puts outthenother side. Wolves break with Cunha but bis pass just evades Lemina. Wolves need to get back in control as they eere in first half

Bogle dives for a free kick & Doyle gets a yellow card. Free jick on the edge of our area again, but easily collected by Jose.

Cunha playing through the centre now and he never stops running! Utd players constantly looking for free kicks.

Another Utd shot goes over the bar from Norwood. Joseputs the ball upnthe pitch for Chan to chase but he’s unlucky with a heavy first touch.

Boubakar Traore being prepared, probabto replace Doyle, RAN goes up left wing but puts a far too heavy ball across the area. Archer scores a very good goal for Utd after Bellegarde failed to clear and it broke to them. Took a fine shot from outside the area to beat Jose who was backpedaling

Good pressing forward by Wolves leads to a corner. Robinson kicks out at Cunha & it’s bring reviewedvwith VAR, check complete. Toti gets a head on the corner but no power. Fabio on for Toti & RAN goes to left back

Wolves struggle to clear in the area & it goes for a corner.VAR check for a handball but no further action. Good play in middle of the park until a poor pass from Chan

Into final 5 mins of normal time, and Wolves corner hacked away. Wolves have rarely looked like scoring and Utd have scored with their only shot on target!!

Ball put into area and reaches Bellegarde and he converts nicely with a deflected shot from the edge of the area.

Cunha puts a good ball in for Fabio’s head but he puts it wide & was offside. High ball into our area headed wide by Bogle. Hold up as VAR look at a possible handball against Wolves but no penalty - thankfully!!

Six added minutes have been played but VAR holdups mean we play on. Fabio concedes a penalty, Being reviewed and another difficult one to judge as to whether there was adequatevcontact, but it is given
Norwood smashes it in and that’s likely to be it

All over & Fabio in tears after conceding such a late penalty. Sheffield are very poor team but they got thebfinal rub of the green with yet another penalty we have conceded and this time it clearly was a penalty. We struggled to convert possession into scoring opportunities again, but Jean-Ricaed Bellegarde took his opening goal for Wolves very well. A shame for our unbeaten run to come tonan end against such a poor team, but perhaps not a total surprise!!

Great Bellegarde goal but after dominating without threatening we just let them off the hook. No, not at all surprising, but time for Fabio to get a fresh start elsewhere. Sad case.

Strangely that, Cheshire, considering the number of times over the years when we're playing supposedly weaker teams, with poor form or their best players injured, we struggle. No matter
who the manager is, we just can't give a convincing performance against so call "struggling" teams.

Awful performance and yet another awful decision from the ref and var, they really don't like us do they!
Never a penalty for me but there you go ref gives it and of cause var side with their mate on the pitch.
Neither team deserved to win the game a draw would of been a fair result.
Why we are so poor against these sort of teams is beyond me we just can't lift ourselves and fall to their level.
With all the points refs and var have robbed us out of already this season we would be sitting 6th or 7th in the table.
I for one am sick to the stomach with var!

The reality is there isn't much skill involved in modern football. Results are decided on VAR, far too many pens given for next to nothing and whether a player on more in a week than most earn in a year can be bothered to run around. Week after week fans throughout the country explain away wins or defeats on systems/tactics etc but it's the emperors new clothes in a sports sense. We wouldn't have beaten Bournemouth last week if it was 11vs 11, we would have not lost to United on the opening day if referee decisions had gone our way. There actually isn't much skill involved in the sport, you're basically watching a casino wheel roulette type of entertainment week after week where skill counts for maybe 5% of what will count to the result.

The biggest dictator of odds in a sport of supposed skill is whether a team plays at home or away which says it all... no sport that involves actual ability like tennis or boxing would have odds influenced by what stadium the match was in. All a load of b*llocks IMO. I remember under Dave Jones in the 03/04 season we didn't win a single game away from home yet beat United and city at molineux - that isn't a sport of skill.

There are a few exceptional teams that have players who excel at scoring goals that stand out, but bar those tiny number, anyone can beat anyone else like flipping a coin. Virtually everyone outside the big 6 has been threatened with relegation in recent times. If we played Sheffield utd tomorrow, we would probably win comfortably with the same tactics and same players which is how daft it all is.

Another depressing VAR non-decision, incredibly almost identical to last week, with Danny Murphy suggesting on MOTD that Schar last week and Baldock this week should have both got a yellow for diving!

I didn’t watch or follow the match yesterday, other than on the BBC updates on my phone, however all that I seem to read suggests (if you take the VAR stupidity out of the equation) it was a poor below par Wolves performance. That’s an equal disappointment to me and I hope on this evidence that the lack of Neto hasn’t signalled a possible downturn in our fortunes. In simple terms, if we could hit the back of the net with any or more regularity then it would at least make ridiculous VAR decisions less influential on the outcome.

Spurs up next …… we’ll probably ‘Ommer ‘em!! 😂
