Match Thread: Wolves vs Tottenham Hotspur

2023 winner

November 11 2023

There can surely be no better day than today for Wolves to face the former League leaders Spurs at Molineux after the disastrous week the London club has endured.

Wolves look to recover from another very poor VAR decision at Brammal Lane last Saturday - which deprived Gary O'Neil of his sixth unbeaten game - and entertain Spurs at Molineux for today's early kick-off. And there seemingly can be no better time to face the team whose Manager has been named Manager of the Month for the third consecutive month and for the first three months of the season - so he must be doing something right!!

However Spurs come to the midlands today without several of their first choice players. James Maddison, Mickey Van de Ven and Richarlison have joined their injured list which already includes Ryan Sessignon, Ivan Perisic and Manor Soloman. Added to that central defenders Christian Romero and Destiny Udogie will serve suspensions after being dismissed against Chelsea on Monday night. So Ange Postecoglu will have his work cut out to field his best team, although he no doubt has a large squad to choose from, and is still likely to field a team which will pose many problems to Wolves.

Wolves will seek to repeat the win they achieved at home to Spurs earlier this year, when Adama Traore scored his last goal for the club, volleying a rebound into the top corner after a Raul Jimenez shot was parried. O'Neil will doubtless be buoyed by the return to the first team last week of Jean-Ricard Belleguarde who opened his scoring account with the club with a well taken goal, to also stake a claim for a starting place for today's game. Pedro Neto will still be absent but otherwise O'Neil has a fit squad to choose from. Hee Chan Hwang will be looking to score at home in his seventh consecutive match which would overtake the record previously set by 'King' John Richards.

Today's game is the early kick-off match and will start at 12:30pm. It will feature on TNT Sports1 and the highlights will be on MotD tonight. Our referee will be Tim Robinson, with Paul Tierney on VAR duty, and all Wolves fans will be hoping we have a VAR controversy-free afternoon!

This board will provide regular updates on the progress of the game for those unable to watch it, whilst members and visitors are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation

I think we all know how the game will go so not much point tuning in. Missed chances for wolves , poor VAR decisions, probable dodgy spurs penalty and wolves being unlucky again in defeat.

So... Sasa Kalajdzic drops to the bench and Jean-Ricard Belleguarde starts. Tommy Doyle is also replaced by Joao Gomes. Probably as strong a team as we could hope for without Neto. Line-up:

It’s the hope that keeps you going, eh Angry? 😂

This has a represent a great opportunity for our lads today, though the lack of Neto remains a big concern. Here we are, a Spurs side, seemingly depleted from a number of first team choices.

Given the Spurs issues, I fancy us today, why not, got to appreciate however that football often does not work like that!

Great ball out of defende to Semedo who advances but makes a very poor pass to lose possession. Cunha breaks and feeds RAN whose shot goes for a corner.
Strong shot from JRB blocked

Good play down the left side earns a Wolves corner which again fails to beat the first defender.

Superb attack by RAN who feeds Cunha but his shot is blocked. Semedo cross goes to the keeper. Gomes catches Porro who goes down screaming but no further action from the ref

Wolves getting several opportunities tobreak but they always seems to fizzle out. Good period of possession for Spurs at the moment.

Good pkay by Chan to control the ball and feed RAN whose cross is high and wide. Max flattens Johnson!

Johnson & Chan tangle and get a talking yo from the ref. Once again Semedo’s final pass is dreadful after a promising break. Lemina brings out a good save from Viccario for a corner, which ends up with the keeper

Another corner to Wolves cleared. Plenty of Wolves pressure leads to a shot from RAN but he’s offside.

Royal brings down Semedobas he heads for the penalty area & gets the game’s first yellow card. Freekick for JCB to take. Fivecadded minutes to play. Free kick put over to RAN. On his right foot but he gets another corner. Lemina’s header deflected for another corner.

Bissouma gets a yellow card for a fouk on Gomes and misses next game. Spurs break and get a corner off RAN, headed wide by Davies before the half time whistle goes.
A very disappointing start as Wokves conceded way too eadily afeter two minutes. They have attacked well and created several chances but on many occasions they just fizzle out. Semedo has featured in many attacks down Wolves right wing but once again his final ball is desperately poor. Wolves have kept Spurs attacking chances to a minimum but they still retain a dangerous edge.
Wolves 0 Spurs 1

Wolves get it into final third but run out of ideas. Great forward play started by Toti ends with a woeful shot from Cunha. JCB earns a corner, ball breaks to present Chan with a perfect chance but he shoots wide.

Wolves need to practice their corner kicks, neither JRB nor RAN can out a decent one in!! Frekick to Wolves putin well but put out forca corner whoch again goes to the near post. Cunha gets into the area but his cridss evades everyone. Bentancour replaces Sarr for Spurs.

Great chance for Lemina but he tries to pass rather than shoot. Excellent run up left wing by RAN. But bis cross is put out for anothercornervto be wasted. G
Joao pits a ball on Sasa’s head but he puts it well wide.

It was a quick thinking free kick from Tommy Doyle to Serabia which started the move and he put an excellent pass in for Lemiba to slip it past Viccario, to inflict back to back home victories against Spurs and back to back defeats for Postecoglu. What a fabulous unbelievable finish and a really well earned three points to lift us back up to 12th place

One of those strange games shere Wolves dominated but never looked like scoring despite creating good chances - just like last season. All kf a sudden Pablo Serabia who has hardly featured this season getsva goidmpass fro Cunha, takes a touch and slamsbit left footed past Viccario. Then Tommy Doyle intelligently takes a quick free kick to Serabia whosebpass to Leminavis perfect for him to slip it into the far corner. Gary. O’Neil nearly ranbto the South stand celebrating a fantastic win. Sasly Dawson who pkayed another fine gamebpicked up hid 5th yellow card andcwill miss the next PL game, but hopefully Santiago Bueno will ge ready to step in. A really good team performance today against a well drilled Spurs team.
Wolves 2 Spurs 1
Well done for a correct forecast to Lupy!

So so late there was hardly time to enjoy it. But what a fabulous end. The Sarabia goal will be one of the seasons greatest.
When you look at the result against a weakened Spurs nobody would have been exactly surprised but the match was not like that.
After a poor start we dominated without anything vaguely threatening. So many wasted freekicks and corners. We talk about the loss of Neto’s attacking play but we also miss his corners.
Hope we use the international break to fix that.
Nevertheless, a warm glow after that game.

I was only able to listen to the commentary yesterday and have seen the highlights on MOTD and what stands out for me is that the score let Spurs off lightly. We created by far the greater number of opportunities and if we had been more clinical could have put the match to rest well before extra time. What impressed me most was the effort throughout the team, they never gave up and held that belief of squeezing something out of the match right to the end. GON does seem to have galvanised the group and has produced a team that is a pleasure to watch for their application alone, really brings the fans onside. If this continues and with the quality we have I fully expect us to start putting some teams to the sword.

What a fabulous finish to a game, one of those to remember.

I was down the pub with me Ivybridge Wolves mates and as the second half progresses and like a broken record, I kept repeating ‘we’ll never score in a month of Sundays’ …. the opportunities and chances we wasted were adding up yet again. And then as the added time board appeared, Cunha pops a decent balls in the box and Sarabia comes up with a world class first touch and piece of skill followed by a quite brilliant finish. Cue mayhem …… and that was just the pub! It was the least we deserved from a match we largely controlled and personally I’d have been happy with the point. Have a look at the replay, even O’Neil had a hand in the goal, catching the ball on the touch line and releasing it quick for the throw.

What I hadn’t anticipated was that the fight hadn’t stopped there. This time Doyle was really quick thinking with a rapid and intelligent free kick to Sarabia who put that wonderful through ball in for Lemina ….. the rest is history. I was all over the place, dancing around the bar!! Utterly thrilling! I love football sometimes!!! Mentioning Lemina, what a great game he had, led from the front, always involved, a fitting winner.

Still plenty to do with this side, but Gary O’Neil is really giving it a great go and I am delighted at his contribution Just look of the reaction of all of the players when the winner went in …… celebrating vociferously, all of them together, even those on the bench. O’Neil has certainly got an excellent team spirit going at Wolves. As Lupy says, they collectively never give up, a wonderful attribute.

Nice to see us first on MOTD however if you like a bit of partisan commentary, give this a watch the Wolves TV extended highlights, it’s great stuff from Mikey Burrows, Thommo and Nayls with a great result from a great match!!
