Match Thread: Brentford Town vs Wolves

No drones today please
By Wolves
December 27 2023

After only the shortest of festive breaks Wolves travel away to Brentford today in search of another three points following the win over Chelsea at Molineux on Christmas Eve.

Ahead of what is likely to be a tight and challenging game the team will hopefully have recovered well and prepared for another huge challenge, in the knowledge that historically the team have done well at their opponents home ground. Last season Diego Costa was dismissed witha red card after clashing with the wily Ben Mee who set him up for the fall, but Ruben Neves managed to score an equaliser to earn Wolves a point. The previous season in a game that for interupted for a lengthy period by a drone hovering over the ground Wolves came out winners by two goals to one with goals from Joao Moutinho and - again - Ruben Neves.

There hasn't really been time for Gary O'Neil to give a pre-match press conference, but in the post match briefing following Sunday's game he stated that Craig Dawson had to leave the pitch after sustaining a fairly deep cut to his knee, but he expected him to be fit to play today. There didn't appear to be any other injury concerns, but of course we don't know whether Jean-Ricard Belleguarde and Boubakar Traore who were unavailable due to illness will be fit to play, whilst the ongoing issue of Pedro Neto's fitness also hangs in the balance. However it's fair to say that Pablo Serabia appears to be settling into his role in the team with more match time and was really quite productive on Sunday, whilst Mario Lemina capped a superb performance which is seeing him create attacking play from his midfield general position with a well taken goal. How pleasing was it also for Wolves fans to see the faithful servant Matt Doherty gracefully slot his goal past Petrovic for his first Premier Leagu goal since returning to Molineux??

Meanwhile have three players, including Ivan Toney and Ben Mee supended with another six on the injury list including striker Brian Mbuemo, so just perhaps there is no better time to play at the GTech Community Stadium!!

Today's match is due to kick off at 19:30 hrs and in common with all yesterday's games will be screened on Amazon Prime TV. Our referee will be be Andy Madley (who's brother Bobby sent Costa off last season before disappearing from the premiership again!) with Paul Tierney on VAR duty.

This board will hope to provide regular updates on the progress of the game for those unable to watch it live, whilst board members and visitors are encouraged to post their own observations and comments and to join in the conversation.

If there was a good time to play Brentford it's now, they have lots of injuries and suspensions so in a bit of disarray. Unfortunately our record in the Capital is abysmal and Brentford have had a period of rest which the schedule hasn't allowed us. I think we should get a draw at least and if we have a squad with some energy left, perhaps a win.
Cmon lads.

Brentford are a better team with better players on paper but with their injuries, we may nick a point.

One change for this evening's game with Santi Bueno coming in for Dawson. Pedro Neto makes it on to the bench. Line-up:

Fantastic to see Neto back in the side.Fingers crossed he’ll get some minutes on the pitch and maybe push for a first XI place v Everton on Saturday.

As for tonight, personally I’d be happy with a point. It’s in London aye it?!

First corner to Town fizzles out. Cunha shows his skill early on. Good attacking play by Max ends with a blocked shot from Joao

Important clearance by Toti after a ball put over the area. Bit scrappy at present

Hwang puts a ball across the area and it’s very nearly deflected in but goes over for Wolves first corner which is converted by Mario Lemina with a fine header after the ball is put back in by Pablo

Mix up in their defence from kick off, Hwang intercepts and goes round the keeper for No. 2. It was a poor pass back by Collins!!

Wolves fail to clear the ball in the area and Wissa puts it away, VAR checking for a possible handball, but the goal stands.

Excellent ball into our area but a weak header & Jose collects easily.

What’s this going to end as? 6-6?
What a start. Thankfully we’re still ahead. Nice to see Collins still thinks he’s a Wolves player putting it on a plate for Hwang. The cross from Sarabia for the Lemina goal was a peach.
Both defences looking dodgy so far.

Super run forward out of defence with the ball by Nelson, he passes to Hwang who loses it too easily At the other end Toti has his work cut out with Wissa.

Town break into our area but Wissa then Maupay both miss with shots. Whistle goes for half time after a mos5 unusual half featuring four goals. Wolves have Ben very lively considering most of them played the whole game on Sunday. A superb cross by Serabia well met by Lemina’s head for the first, a misplaced back pass by Collins for an opportunistic goal for Hwang followed by another for him featuring a neat flick over the defender. A poor goal conceded by our defence but otherwise they have been pretty solid.

Can only be happy with that, some really impressive interplay between our forwards just hope that doesn't change with Hwang going off. Magic feet from RAN, lovely to watch. Good pressing but may be difficult to maintain.
More of the same please.

RAN can’t stop Maupay down our left wing & Wissa puts it into the area but they can’t convert. Ball fizzed across our area from the left and put out for a corner which is cleared. Wolves break through JRB. But a poor ball put in by Pablo

Good play forward by RAN but poor final pass spoils it. Lewis-Potter puts a really dangerous ball across our area but it just eludes everyone. Great clearance by RAN after a super run into the area and cross by Lewis-Potter

Re: Match Thread: Brentford Town vs Wolves

70 minutes gone and Wolves still lead but having to defend well as Bees mount several attacks. Lewis-Potter is a real tricky handful down their left side and gets them a corner which is well cleared.

Competent and comfortable second half, some extremely good defending, Kilman was excellent.

A win in London and a 4 goal haul. Off the top of my head, when did we last score 4 in the top flight? I think maybe v Blackpool 10 plus years ago.

Great win, very enjoyable indeed.

Toffees next up!!

I was completely under-whelmed by Gary O'Neil's appointment and would have been glad just to stay up, especially as he had no pre-season. In some ways it's similar to other seasons, struggle against the lower sides but do well against the better ones but so far he's doing a cracking job. After three seasons of struggling to score we are at last scoring more regularly. Like O'Neil, I was unimpressed with Lamina arriving, given that he hardly set the World on fire when he previously played in the Premiership but what a player he has been for us. Fair enough, Brentford had players missing but they had had ten days between matches whereas we played on Christmas Eve and whoever the opposition, the most you can do is win convincingly. Great first half and managed things well in the second and I can't remember the last time we scored four, especially away from home. Man of the Match has to be Nathan Collins.

GON is doing a very good job so far considering we can't outbid clubs like Bournemouth for players and have the 5th lowest wage bill in the entire league despite having been in it donkeys years now. If he continues as he is, there is a strong chance he will get poached by a bigger club with more ambition, but he is certainly proving numerous doubters wrong. 5 years ago we scraped into 7th ( despite only being 7 points above 11th) which TBF was the highlight of the last 40 years. We were told that Fosun had ambition to be "the best of rest" pushing for European football on a regular basis but covid and other world factors seem to have stopped that aim indefinitely with a current record of having lost more games than we have won being a sign of great success.

The annual aim of avoiding relegation is essentially the club's ceiling year after year..let's hope for a run in the cup to generate some excitement.

That said as Andy says we seem to be scoring more goals, before the Brentford match we were the 14th ranked in the highest number of goals scored in the league which is certainly a marked improvement on previous seasons where we were sometimes in the bottom 3 relying on the defence. Let's hope the good work continues against Everton ( who would be above us if it wasn't for the 10 point deduction). Have fosun got some hiiden gems lined up in January to take us to a top half finish, that is the question (Sm56)
