Match Thread: FA Cup 3rd Round Wolves vs Brentford FC

What it's albout
By Wolves
January 5 2024

Happy New Year Wolves Fans   Wolves aim to continue their winning run of three consecutive wins tonight with a visit to the GTech Community Stadium where they recently had a very succesful evening. The third round of the FA Cup beckons and a good run in the competition would surely be welcomed by the club and the fans.

After a tough and challenging run of htree games in six days, Wolves players may well be looking forward to getting over tonight's game ahead of the international break. However head coach Gary O'Neil has already stated that he has no plans to make sweeping changes to the team for this game, especially as he is already without Rayan Ait-Nouri and Boubakar Traore who are at AFCON, Hee Chan Hwang who is at the Asia Cup and Mario Lemina who is mourning the death of his father in France, so he doesn't have a great deal of options to choose from, unless he dips into the Under 23's or Under 21's squads. So the presumtion is that he will field as strong a team as possible, with minor changes such as Dan Bentley stepping into goal, and possibly Santiago Bueno getting a game in defence. Hugo Bueno is likely to step in for Ait-Nouri with Tommy Doyle likely to maintain his midfield position after a very positive showing against Everton.

It seems a six month loan deal has now been agreed for Sasa Kaladjzic to move to Eintracht Frankfurt as soon as he is available, and with Fabio Silka having already moved on loan to Rangers, FGrasier going on loan to Shrewsbury and Hwang away we can only presume that O'Neil has a plan for his strike force if the need arises. However it must be said that Matheus Cunha has matured no end in our forward line this season scoring and provising assists and will hopefully benefit even more with the return of Pedro Neto to the line-up.

Brentford still have a number of notable absentees, particularly with Ivan Toney still suspended until later in the month.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:15pm and will not be screened on any major UK station. Our referee will be Tony Harrington with Rebecca Welsh on VAR Duty

This board will endeavour to provide regular updates on the progress of the match subject to adequate access. Board members and visitors are encouraged to post their own thoughts and observations and join in the conversation.

Subs bench full of youngsters which does highlight how small our first team squad is. Never mind, let's get on with it.

Jose Sa retains his place, Santi Bueno starts as does the Doc and Bellegarde as replacements. Neto and Sasa on the bench, but Bentley, Dawson and Hugo B don't appear in the squad. Line-up:

Joao tackles Norgaarde and gets a straight red card. Norgaarde limping off - he was caught from behind down the Achilles so probably the right decision.

Thommo and Burrows are questioning the red card, not necessarily out of hand, but felt it was debatable. Whatever the situation, has our FA Cup campaign finished before it’s started?

Will take an excellent effort for us to get something out of this

Foul on Doyle goes unpunished but commentary suggesting it was identical to the Gomes sending off. If correct, bloody typical

The ref was certainly closer to the sending off Ivy, & Joao raked the Achilles whereas Doyle was trodden on! Damsgaarde now booked for stopping Cunha

Pinball in the box followed up Maupay who scores.

That, could well be that, though they’ve been playing okay the last 15 minutes.

Four added minutes to play. Maupay is masterful at falling over whenever challenged & wins another free kick ten yds out, which ends up being fired wide.

Half time after a very difficult half for Wolves. Worst possible start when Joao Gomez was dismissed for a tackle from behind which also ended Norgaarde’s game. Excellent shot from Maupay to give Bees the lead in a crowded area. We could possibly hope to draw level now and take them back to Molineux.

Still much debate about the sending off and the non-sending off. Academic now as we trail by both one goal and one player.

2nd half starts, not impossible for Wolves but a tall order.

Good play by Doc into their area & to feed Pablo but he can’t control it. Down the other end Jose stops a shot from Damsgaarde. Now Dasilva shoots wide on the volley.

Lewis-Potter falls over when he feels JRB behind him & free kick given two yds outside our area. Jose pushes Maupay out of his way and play is held up whilst VAR look at it!! Wolves wall holds good against free kick.

Corner to Wolves and after a second corner Tommy Doyle smashes a left footed shot from outside the area into the top right corner giving their keeper no chance. What a way to open his Wolves account!

Looking forward to seeing that Doyle goal! He’s followed it up by knocking down a Brentford defender šŸ˜‚, Jensen I believe.

The Doyle strike is our firs goalt from outside the box. Jensen could have to be replaced.

Ball put over into our area brings a good save out of Jose but free kick given against Maupay. Into final 3 minutes & Neto takes it upfield to get another corner. Breaks down & Bees attack again. Janelle puts his cross over too hard. Wolves bring on Chirewa for his debut replacing JRB who has worked really hard all game. Five added minutes to play

Great play by Cunha to feed Neto who shoots but too high. Jose does well to prevent a corner. Nelson concedes a corner against Lewis-Potter followed by handbags between them & both get a yellow card. Play being held up apparently by VAR, but now complete.

Bees attack but Jose collects and smothers the ball. All over and Jose winds up the fans behind him. Lights have gone out at the stadium. A very hard game for Wolves having to play 80+ minutes with ten men after Joao’s sending off. Two very well taken goals, including a superb first for Tommy Doyle, and so we go back to Molineux for a replay in two weeks.

Great result after playing most the game with 10 men and a great goal by Doyle.
The red card may of been right but I think brentford should of had one to, double standards yet again but we are used to having the refs and var against us by now.
Well done 10 man wolves playing against 13 yet again!

10 men, away from home against a Premiership side and coming back from a goal behind, the team did exceptionally well. Doyle was fantastic and a great goal topped off his performance. Surely signing him for such a small fee is a no-brainer Cunha played well, Santiago slotted in nicely and Neto again looked sharp. The sending off, although accidental, I thought was sadly correct but the stamp on Doyle later should have seen Brentford down to 10. And apparently it's now alright to grab someone around the throat as long as it's a Wolves player you're throttling. I don't think it was anyone on here but earlier in the season I read no end on other groups saying how O'Neil had lost the changing room, they didn't want to play for him and he would be sacked by Christmas. I wonder what all the know-alls think now, although lose a couple of matches and they'll be back.

Over the years the mol mix and the insane wolves forum have actually affected my support for the club realising how many morons support wolves. They swing from one extreme to another and the likes of Jos wolf , mugwimp ( who has been crying for years how great Fabio Silva is and anyone not agreeing is clueless) are some of the saddest fckers I've ever encountered on the Web let alone any football forum.
