Wolves face Brentford for the third time this season this evening to replay the third round FA Cup tie following the draw at the Gtech Community stadium. The tie provides an extra incentive to Wolves as the winners will then face local rivals West Brom in the 4th Round.
Having had to play for over 80 minutes with ten men in the last game Wolves will hope that a full team will be able to defeat Brentford at the second attempt to progress this evening. Coach Gary O'Neil expects a close game as both teams know each other and their strengths etc quite well by now. He also knows he has to re-jig his midfield as Joao Gomez starts a three match ban following his red card two weeks ago. Mario Lemina is back training with the squad but is unlikely to be sufficiently match fit to start. Tommy Doyle will be expected to keep his starting place after his excellent performance and goal, as will Jean-Ricard Belleguard. Hugo Bueno is now fit to return so he may replace Matt Doherty at left back, whilst Santi Bueno is likely also to start as Matt Dawson is still recovering from his knee injury. Judging by his apparent fitness level when he came on at Brentford perhaps we can expect Pedro Neto to start this one up front with Pablo Serabia and Matheus Cunha. Nathan Fraser has returned to the club from his loan and will be in the squad in the absence of Sasa Kaladjzic and Fabio Silva.
Brentford are still struggling with injuries to some major players, plus Ivan Toney is still serving his suspension until tomorrow!!
The game will kick off at 7:30 pm and will go to extra time and penalties if required so that there is a definite winner by the end of the evening. Our referee for this game will be Andrew Madley - who refereed our league game there last month - and he will have Graham Scott on VAR duty if needed.
The game is not being screened on any TV channels.
This board will do its best to post regular updates on the progress of the match subject to adequate access, whilst members and visitors are encouraged to post their own observations and opinions and join in the conversation.

Doc keeps his place whilst Joe Hodge steps in for Gomez. No starting place for Neto but no doubt he will make an appearance later. Interesting to see Dawson and Mosquera on the bench. Line-up:

Hoping to see Neto at some point however hopefully the first XI will get us going and on the right path. Just the small matter of the 4th Round match ‘up the road’ and live on telly.

We’re playing well, the Brentford goal was so disappointing, the defending wasn’t great but overall plenty of reasons to be positive for the second half. If being honest, we should be winning really.

Half time and it’s level pegging so far. Wolves have done most of the attacking and played some good stuff, but gave away a sloppy free kick and failed to clear before Nathan Collins managed to steer it in. Nelson Semedo equalised but the details are sketchy at present. Wolves will hopefully go on to build on their good play and finish the game off in the second half

Why are we resting players? The FA cup is all we have to play for this season yet again other than the giddy heights of avoiding relegation..it makes no sense. If we lose tonight with a weakened team, the season aim is literally to stay in the prem - how fcking dull is that?
It's time all teams unless in the champions league started to put out their best 11 in the cup unless they are just content to never win anything year after meaning their supporters die of old age or boredom.

Seems like an entertaining cup tie and a throwback to times gone by, but it's a shame in 2024 no one can watch it unless they break the law watching an illegal stream.

Bueno shoots just wide before the final whistle goes. That’s it and a 4th round tie at the Hawthorns awaits us. Sounded like a really good game and a shame it wasn’t televised. Great effort by our team to come back from goals down twice against a Premiership team, and then to earn a penalty put away by the excellent Cunha.

Incidentally, I'm not sure Brentford "town" when listed on the prediction league is a correct name for the team . The football club doesn't have town in its name or at least if it does, I've never seen it mentioned before. The name seems to keep cropping up and with us playing them yet again soon, it will be 4 times in a matter of weeks ..sick of the sight of them

I must be honest I wasn’t sure if they were still a ‘Town’ team of not but took a chance on it!! Not unhappy to see them again soon after two wins and a draw against them! Think it’s likely to be a much harder struggle at Brighton on Monday.
Incidentally Angry I wasn’t aware you were broadening out the issue of playing the best team in your earlier Kilman and. We are I suppose used to PL teams playing their second eleven against teams from the lower leagues and losing which is presumably a calculated risk. As for Wolves players being on the bench it seems to me a reasonable ploy to have them ready to play part of the match in their return from injury, such as with Dawson who played a blinder when he came on.

It was torture listening to it on the radio. Sounds as though Cunha, and from what I've seen from the highlights, particularly played well. I would love a cup run and it's about time we had one again. Agree with the comments about playing your strongest team. I know the reasons why clubs rotate for cup ties but I've never gone along with it. Pleased that O'Neil has gone as strong as he can so far but with the players we've got missing he hasn't had much option. Hope he continues to go strong when everyone is back.

You may be right Cheshire regarding the post stating we are playing a weakened team thinking about the specific players in question, but over the years numerous clubs including wolves have treated the Cup with borderline contempt. As it's our only chance ( along with similar size clubs) of silverware regardless of how unlikely it is, there should be very little "rotation" for these games. If players aren't getting gametime, the reserves/under 23s are there for a reason instead of "Cup keepers" for eg which is tantamount to keeping a player happy over a club being knocked out of the only competition it can possibly win..utter madness

It hit home for me when we reached the semi-finals a few years back. I'm not blaming Ruddy for the defeat but it seemed bl00dy daft to me to be playing an FA Cup semi-final with your reserve goalkeeper and presumably we would have done the same thing if we had reached the final.

Indeed Andy, players need to realise they are employed by the club for that club to use them as it sees fit to maximise its chances of success, not the other way around.

I don't know if anyone else has heard this but a linesman was injured during extra-time so the fourth official took his place. A Wolves supporter who was an under 12's referee was recruited as the fourth official and given a crash course on how to use the numbers board. The poor chap had to stay neutral and couldn't celebrate the winning goal.
