Match Thread: Brighton & HA v Wolves 26.10.24 KO 3pm

Wolves make the relatively long trip down to the south coast to play Brighton who have won their last two, sitting 5th in the league on 15 points, 14 points and 15 places ahead of us. We beat them in the FA Cup in January, otherwise we have failed to win v the Seagulls since December 2021 – a period which has witnessed some heavy defeats, including 0-6 at The Amex and 1-4 at Molineux. They also beat us in the league cup earlier in the season. With this in mind, a point would be great, but we need all 3, no doubt about it. Brighton will be strong favourites at home as they have beat us more than any other side in the topflight!
A much better structure last week almost gained a point v Man City and the nature of the defeat, a last-minute Stones header (plus the usual lengthy VAR decision against us), was a real choker. So close but so far to an important point.
I imagine that Gary O’Neil will still stick to the 3/5 at the back in a similar lineup to prevent Brighton reaching a hattrick of consecutive victories. It seems the obvious ploy in our never-ending effort to expunge the memory of our last win, a mere 182 days ago. Oh yes, I remember it well. Having said that, GON has said he will be flexible between playing with either a back four or back five. Surely the latter at the Amex? On the positive for Wolves, Cunha, with 11 premier league away goals, is only beaten by Watkins and Haaland since August 2023. Something to hang onto, and should we play in manner are capable of and what we have seen in fits and starts, Wolves should present problems to Brighton. Consistency and discipline is the key. As for the goalkeeping position, Johnstone is likely to be fit again, this following a very good display from Sa last week. On this topic, GON is quoted as saying "I'm really clear on who is the best goalkeeper to start for us tomorrow (Saturday)”, so we will have to watch this space!

Brighton easily the better side first half but stoic defending reduced their chances successfully until a dreadful kick fro Sa, a nice swift interplay and Wellbeck is on fire.
Sarabia and Forbs on second half plus the formation change and Wolves transformed into the better side! Not many chances but Bueno should have done much better with a header. Late on Ferguson scores and my heart sank. Not to be, our efforts weren’t denied, RAN smashing home after a scramble and Dawson effort and then pandemonium as Brighton fluffed their lines at one end then a superb Doyle ball put Cunha in who did the business courtesy of a deflection. Wonderful.
Okay this season, I’ll take my adrenaline moments where I can, but that was great. Palace and Southampton matches are now massive.
A word for the Wolves supporters. Unbelievably good yesterday.
As for the site, it carries on. It has been tough for me recently with a number of personal issues involving health and health of those close to me which has restricted my input. I have to say now that next week, if all goes to plan, I hope to be watching the match at a 60th birthday, then for Soton, I hope to be at Molineux for the first time this season which will reduce match commentary. The prediction league is now up to date.

Having said that, we still have a chance especially with the results of the teams around us. It is incredible that we are still in touch.
Apart from my adrenaline rush yesterday, we do remain on a paltry total, nevertheless it is the manner of the point yesterday which does give me hope. It was a gritty performance for a change and the players refused to give up and Wolves were clearly the better side in the second half. Away to a very good Brighton side, that really pleased me. As I said, it would have been an excellent point if it weren’t for the fact we needed all three! But it was a thrilling single point nonetheless. I agree that it was invaluable.
I’ll be cheering on Spurs today at Palace for definite !
