Match Thread: Tottenham Hotspur v Wolves 29.12.2024 KO 3pm

All Together Now

Today's picture of togetherness tells a story ........ more of the same please! Wolves make the hop down to London today to face Spurs at the impressive Tottenham Hotspur stadium. It’s a wonderful football ground which I had the pleasure of attending earlier in 2024 and thoroughly enjoyed the day ….. it ay Molineux though! Wolves enter into this after a upturn in form with two consecutive victories under Vitor Pereira both with two clean sheets (compare that to 1 in the previous 28). The organisation on the pitch has palpably improved with a higher degree of energy, positional play and collective team work and defending to give new hope to supporters. It is evident that further work is required in defense but the endeavour as a whole has been encouraging. Additionally, Wolves travel to Spurs with an unusual record (for us) of winning the last three matches against them, including that amazing last gasp 2-1 at Molineux last season. Chickens are not being counted however, our team requires the same level of work rate which provided that heartwarming boxing day festive treat!

Whilst the Man Utd performance was a great all round team effort, Matteus Cunha stole the headlines again after another excellent and influential 90 minutes, scoring direct from the corner, unselfishly setting Hwang up for the second and being a constant thorn in the Man Utd side the whole game. It has lead to more headlines with Pereira stating he won’t be going anywhere in the January window with the acknowledgement Cunha is turning out to be a bit of a Wolves gem. As for Vitor Pereira, he now has the opportunity to do what no other Wolves manager has ever achieved – that is to win their first 3 top flight games!! Remarkable to even be in this position!

The team selection will be fascinating yet again, as the new management era beds in, the big question is whether Vitor will change a winning line up? I’m going to guess no, depending on knocks and niggles unknown to me. Will Lemina be fit enough for a place in the side or the bench? Whoever is selected, the Pereira mantra of enhancing player confidence will remain so important.

Tottenham have experienced significant inconsistency of late and will want to quicky reverse a trend of two consecutive losses against Forest 1-0 (A) and a 3-6 thrashing v Liverpool (H). Indeed they’ve lost 4 of their last 6 league matches leading to a sequence of uncomfortable Postecoglou media interviews, though being 8 points ahead of us, I’ll not be crying too much. In terms of matches lost in 2024, they have the third worst record with 16 games, only surpassed by Brentford (17) and, yes you guessed it, Wolves (21).

Naturally it be a difficult match in front of a vociferous home crowd, however if we can keep it as tight as possible, I think the home supporters will start to get the hump (a technical term) and offer an opportunity for Wolves to get on the front foot ….. and our fans in that ground are noted for their excellent supporting noise.

In a practically full English league program today, Wolves kick off at 3pm with basement rivals Leicester at home to Manchester City, Palace at home to Southampton and Everton at home to Forest with Ipswich v Chelsea tomorrow night. It’s sure to be another nervy afternoon to see where we stand by 5pm.

In a quirk of dates, on 29th December 2018, I made to journey to see Wolves at Spurs in the season they played home matches at Wembley. After going 1-0 down in the first half to a Kane left footed screamer, an excellent spirited comeback in the second half and goals from Boly, Jimenez and Costa reversed matters to give us a well deserved London victory. A repetition of that this afternoon, not necessarily going 1-0 down, would be quite a boost today.

Enjoy the match today, good luck to the team, everything crossed and please leave your comments in the thread below.

All the best and as this is the last fixture in 2024, Happy New Year!!

UTW!

Toti was injured so fair enough but I didn't get Larsen and Guedes being dropped. It was a good point away from home however and two good goals from us. Looks as though we still haven't mastered the art of defending corners yet.

Well deserved point away from home, but another sloppy goal from a corner, we really need to sort this out.
Last 3 games we have looked a different team and everybody is fighting for the team, just shows how O'Neil had lost the dressing room.
Nunos forest up next, going to be a tough one they are going really well but they have to lose one soon hopefully, let's hope it's a week on Monday.
Happy new year to everyone.
