Match Thread: Liverpool v Wolves 2pm KO 16.02.25

It can be done

February 16 2025

Two wins in a row, one in the league, one in the cup and Wolves find themselves up against the league leaders at Anfield. By contrast, Liverpool have failed to win their last two, a much changed team losing to Plymouth Argyle and then a last minute equaliser denying victory away to fierce rivals Everton. Liverpool will be up for todays match, no question about it! Despite winning just three of their last league fixtures (drawing the other three) Liverpool remain 4 points clear of Arsenal in second and 10 points from Forest in third. Wolves’ performances have recently improved though results and points are what we need but this will be as tough as it gets. Everton’s excellent run means they are clear and it’s West Ham and Spurs who we now look up to, both eight points after yesterday’s games. Thankfully despite Ipswich drawing at Villa, we are still two clear ahead of both them and Leicester, nevertheless it remains precarious to say the least. A point today would be outstanding.

So, another match at Anfield, a place where we have not won in the league since Stephen Wards Christmas chip into the net in 2010, indeed since then, we’ve lost all nine although we’ve had some poor luck, notably when Neto’s toe nail was adjudged to be offside. We last beat Liverpool in February 2023, a fine and deserved 3-0 victory however our side will have to be at their maximum to get even close to that. The very best of luck to our players this afternoon.

Pereira will have a strong squad to chose from, though Hwang is out with a hamstring which resulted in his withdrawal at Ewood Park, and will this game come too quick for Larson? It will be fascinating to see if Munetsi and Djiga get a starting place, the former having an influential debut after replacing Guedes …. On another day he might have scored one or two! The way the midfield and defence combine today will be crucial, Liverpool have scored at least two in the last nine home matches, a chance for the likes of Agbadou and J Gomes to show their collective metal and contain a powerful forward line. Still, at the other end, Liverpool have conceded in their last four home league games, so there is hope for Cunha and others, Cunha again coming in for praise by Pereira this week.

Where there is a chance, there is hope, the odds have been 7/1 for the draw and 11/1 for a Wolves win, the bookies have all but given up on us, nevertheless we have won these type of matches in the past, it’s up to Pereira and his team to revive Wolves and return us to those days again.

Enjoy the game, it kicks off at 2pm this afternoon and will be screened live on Sky. Please leave your comments and thoughts in the thread below.

We currently have a bit of a bounce in our step so if we can contain Liverpool initially we may gain in confidence and get a foothold in the match and then who knows what could happen. I would expect us to score so with that in mind Liverpool would have to score two at least to secure all three points. Expecting a 2-2 draw. Cmon lads.

What's the point in these games? We have no chance of winning and if by some miracle Lpool don't beat us via football, VAR will ensure they get 3 points. I won't be watching, it's uncompetitive and just lambs to the slaughter. If it was a boxing match it'd be like watching a heavyweight batter a lightweight and just a waste of everyone's time.

Wolves playing in all gold again. Seems to be the flavour for away games this year, hope it brings a touch of fortune.

And we’re off.

Lively start including a couple of corners, one to us. Liverpool dominating possession well, solid defending from Wolves (so far), chances of a few Old Gold breakaways.

10 gone, another Liverpool corner, well defended from Agbadou

1-0 Diaz.

He bundled it over the line from a break after we gave the ball away very cheaply when in an advanced position. An ugly goal but sadly, they all count.

Two episodes of dodgy Toti defending, the first he was lucky to get away with it, the second Agbadou came to the rescue

Agbadou a bit of a shocker, missed the ball, Diaz through on goal and Sa makes a clumsy challenge. Penalty to Liverpool confirmed after a VAR review.

Salah to take, he scores. It’s 2-0

Wolves get a free kick on the edge of the box, Konate could easily have got his second yellow, but Agbadou gets a yellow instead for dissent. Cunha fires the kick in and narrowly wide.

The Konate decision is one you feel would have been judged more harshly for a player in Gold. Or is it just me!!?

A strange half and we dont deserve to be two down.

The ref has made some homer style decisions, Konate should be off in my view, but at least he didn’t send Agbadou off when Diaz dived to try and get him a second yellow. The penalty was a bit dodgy as Agbadou got a shove in the back prior to Sa fouling.

Wolves looked decent in defence in the main, but less assured following a Wolves attack. I think we deserve a goal but it’s a long way back from here.

Only able to listen to the commentary and it sounds like we are suffering at the hands of the referee and var again.

Never a penalty should of been a foul on agbadou.
Liverpool should of been down to 10 men also.
Ref hooper may aswell have a red shirt on he's a disgrace.

7 minutes into the second half with Monetsi i replacing Sarabia and Bellegarde for Guedes. The two have combined to create a 1 on 1 between Monetsi and Allison. Allison saves really well. Also a Salah goal is disallowed for offside

Another penalty, another situation where Bellegarde gives the ball away when in attack, a quick Liverpool break and a nice ball to set Jota up who is floored by Agbadou.

Hang on, it’s a VAR review, did Agbadou actually touch Jota …… I think no.

No penalty, correct decision. Jota did not cover himself in glory there, why no yellow? And against us. Poor.

Agbadou got injured in that play and Bueno is on.

A great chance for us, TAA gives it away but Cunha and others are too slow and deliberate and J Gomes hits a left footer high and well wide.

What a great goal.

Cuhna and it’s 2-1.

Anfield has been strangely quiet for most of this match and the goal certainly hasn’t changed that. We deserve that goal.

Wolves keeping up the pressure but have failed in the killer pass.

It’s nervy, Doyle is about to come on for Joao Gomes. Just about 83 gone

A great Quansa block prevents Munetsi scoring.

90th minute. Cunha is moaning at the ref, 6 minutes to be added.

Free kick on the edge of the box for Wolves.

If they win this, Anfield will breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Doyle takes it, hits the wall. Corner

MacAllister goes down in a heap and stays on the floor for ages.Liverpool have the ball near our corner flag. Lima has a chance to cross (on for Semedo) but instead fouls

Final whistle. A very good Wolves performance but the biggest stat will say Liverpool 2-1 Wolves.

Relief for the red, agony for Wolves, easily the better side in the second half but key decisions in the first half went against us.

So bl00dy frustrating

Fair to say we could of got something out of the game if it wasn't for yet another biased performance from a poor referee.
Hang you're head in shame Hooper you got what you wanted 3 points for Liverpool.
Not happy but we move on, we can take heart from that performance 2nd half but we just lacked that killer touch.
Lucky Liverpool.

About the only thing that referee got right was when the tubby little @#$%& waddled over to the screen and disallowed the penalty, and even then he didn't yellow card Jota for diving. Great goal from Cunha, we'll miss him next season. I love the all gold kit.

Does anyone know if Sam Johnstone was injured? I only ask because he played last week as our "Cup goalkeeper", (which I disagree with) presumably to get him some "game time" in case he is needed and then today Dan Bentley, who hasn't had "game time", is on the bench.
