Match Thread: Wolves v Everton KO 8pm 08.03.2025

Wolves are back to league action at Molineux on Saturday evening versus Everton with an 8pm start and in front of the Sky cameras. Wolves’ last ever game at Goodison earlier in the season ended up in a 4-0 rout by the Toffees who were, at the time, fellow relegation candidates. Since then both clubs have made managerial changes, Everton introducing David Moyes for his second spell following which their fortunes have altered dramatically, the Blues now sitting a comfortable 10 points above us in the table and safe.
Everton will be looking to grasp the league double over Wolves, however our home form against them is encouraging, including a terrific and thoroughly deserved 3-0 win last season. That would be quite something if that home performance could be repeated.
The fitness for Guedes will be checked before kickoff, nevertheless the big issue is who is selected in place of Cunha and who can step up to both create and find the back of the net during the Brazilians absence. Pereira and the lads need to solve this issue which previously presented so many problems when faced with the same dilemma in January. A lot has been written about Cunha’s inexplicable moment of madness and red card ….. in the 120th minute of the match …… and so potentially damaging to the club. Additionally, he has now been charged with misconduct which could easily extend the automatic three game ban after his marching orders in December? A great player, but seemingly a total deficiency of control when the red mist descends. He’s put more pressure on Pereira to find the solution, even if the situation has served to highlight that we are too reliant on a single player.
Perhaps Joao Gomes can fill some of the gap, a player who gives his all and has the ability to find the net as well as finding space and a pass. Latterly, Andre has impressed too so we may have the necessary hope in midfield, then it’s up to the forwards to find their form. A little goal surge from Larsen certainly wouldn’t go amiss!
This will be a difficult game for Wolves, the bookies make Everton favourites. Only Liverpool have won more points than Everton in this new Moyes era, even so, as said many times before and irrespective of the opposition, we need points. Before we kick off, we will know the full time scores of Ipswich (A to Palace) and Soton (A to Liverpool) with Leicester away to Chelsea on Sunday …. Will such prior knowledge be a benefit or a hinderance? Putting that to one side, how refreshing would if we started to pull away from the bottom and towards a respectable seasons point total?
I am publishing this on Friday evening as I’m travelling tomorrow, happy to say that we’ll be at the match. I’m even happier to say that before the game, we’ll be meeting up with one of Cheshire Wolf’s relatives and friends. Whilst I’ll make allowances that they’re Toffees, there is no doubt we will unite in raising a glass for Chesh ….. perhaps they might even join me with an ‘Up The Wolves’?!

Paul Merson is another of those professional Southerners, who awakes daily with the sole objective of pi55ing me off ; he succeeded yet again with his ‘analysis’ of the relegation battle saying Wolves will lose the next four matches. Simplistic moron.

New it was going to be tough tonight Everton have been going well since moyes returned.
The usual huff and puff from wolves but not much quality in front of goal, we certainly missed cunha that's for sure, but we have to cope the next few games without him and we need someone to step up.
We take the point and move on, it's a point more than Ipswich got today anyway, let's hope for a chelsea win Sunday to keep the gap to 6.
A point under the circumstances might be ok. As the games slip away Leicester and Ipswich will be looking at a mountain.
Never thought I’d be rooting for Chelsea.
As for the football , on the night, two well matched sides cancelled each other out in a game of average quality at best. Had a great pre match meet up with Chesh’s relative and friends discussing all sorts including our predicament, Everton’s rise in form and their new ground. After the game they even felt Wolves looked most likely to get a winner, not an impression I gained, though Pickford did make one very good save at his near post. Again the highlights on MOTD seemed to favour us.
The principle issue I will take from the match was the overall lack of invention and creativity, just as if we were missing our main player! Plenty of endeavour , just that we were short of the required cutting edge. In all honesty once the Toffees went ahead I thought we’d lose, however absolutely delighted with the pass from Bellegarde and the first goal in gold from Munetsi. Very pleased for him, he’s been knocking at the door .
Anyway, I’ll take the point, not ideal but with those below us failing again, we widen the gap a fraction more to six. Nice to be back at Molineux, followed up by a wonderful Michael Kiwanuka gig in the Civic last night!
By the way, Wolves gave a lovely tribute for 19 year old Will Payne, who recently died suddenly. He had played for the Wolves disability team and Wolves presented a tribute during HT, printed a piece in the programme and fans clapped at 19 minutes. Quite moving.
Now it’s onto St Mary’s this weekend coming which will be our third and final match in March. Surely we can win that?

And yes, you would expect three points Saturday. Last week I watched Leicester AND Ipswich lose by a single goal. Both played reasonably well and after moving the ball around a bit got whacked by a debilitating sucker-punch. So a point off an improved Everton was hardly the catastrophe some painted.
With six points clearance (and vastly better goal difference) we will likely squeeze out survival. But with scares, lots of them, along the way.
And next season? Time for a change; Shi is looking like Moxey, Chinese businesses are in a world of hurt, and maybe Fosun (in the absence of investment) should cash in ?
Are THESE the golden years we will look back on?!!!
