A win v Saints
By Ivybridge Wolf
March 15 2025

The quest for Premier League survival continues for Wolves today at St Mary’s in Southampton. It is a ground where I have a number of good memories, some terrific fight backs and Wolves victories after dreadful starts and a poor 0-0 in 2005 which ultimately led me to start posting on the Molineux Way …. It’s a long story. The match today represents a crucial opportunity for Wolves to move further away from danger against the whipping boys of the division. With ten games of the season to go, Saints are doomed with just nine points and only two wins, who’ve scored 18 goals less than Wolves and conceded 10 more which is in itself remarkable. Can Wolves take this chance to progress? Surely we can, but being Wolves, such a prospect will only generate apprehension for many Wolves fans!! We’ve been here before.

Having said that, we had a comfortable 2-0 win at Molineux (VAR assisted!) and last week we managed a dogged workmanlike draw versus in form Everton last Saturday night which will provide some confidence to get the three points today. The draw last week turned out to be an important point with Leicester and Ipswich both losing, extending the gap to six points and with a superior goal difference. Even so, how we are still in the hunt with just 23 points from 28 games is astonishing.

More positives, we have beaten Saints in each of our last six league meetings which bodes well. On top of that they have lost their last eight home games this season shipping 29 goals and scoring 5. In addition they have the fewest shots in the league, and the smallest shot to goal ratio. As mentioned earlier, surely we can win this??!!

In terms of the side, Pereira will have Munetsi to select as he has recovered from the minor injury which led to his substitution last week. Great to see him score, he has a habit of getting in the right areas, with Pereira singing his praises leading up to today’s game. I can’t image there will be many changes from the starting XI last weekend with Gomes and Andre starting to gel well in midfield. Being the second match without Cunha, one area of distinct improvement needed is better movement and endeavour in the Wolves front line which was lacking and a bit one dimensional against the Toffees.

Enjoy the match, let’s hope for the right reasons today, wishing the Wolves well to achieve what is required today …. A win and a decent performance. Ipswich are at home to Forest at 3pm and Leicester at home to Man United tomorrow, however it would be better if we just took care of our own business.

Please leave comments and thoughts in the thread below in the usual manner,

UTW!!

No better opportunity to add points to our safety account. Southampton are championship quality at best so we should be putting them to the sword and coming away with three valuable points. The squad does seem to have gelled under Vitor and there is a pattern of play that is recognisable, at long last.
Expecting a 3-0 victory.
Cmon lads.

Teams are out:

Wolves XI: Sa, Doherty, Agbadou, Toti, Nelson Semedo, Joao Gomes, Andre, Ait-Nouri, Munetsi, Bellegarde, Strand Larsen

Subs: Bentley, S Bueno, Hwang, R Gomes, Doyle, Sarabia, Forbs, Guedes, Djiga

I forgot to mention in my preamble that I felt Agbadou was another positive last week and a welcome sight back on the pitch. So far, he’s been a very good signing.

Well with that positivity Angry, I wondered if Andy Keogh was back in the side! 😁

Anyway, just got the second in the Midland Grand National so onto the match.

12 minutes in, Wolves playing in their now familiar all Gold away strip. It’s 0-0

22 minutes gone, it’s 1-0 to Wolves! Scored about 5 minutes ago.

Overall Southampton had the better start but after a decent Bellegarde cross, Strand Larsen was unopposed with the Saints centre half asleep on duty and a lovely downward header ends in the back of the net. Could Ramsdale have done better? Who cares.

That was our first effort on target. COYW!

Southampton having the lion share of possession but they are short of ideas in the final third. Wolves defending snuffing everything out.

Soton corner after a very good Agbadou interception, corner is easy for Sa. 39 gone

A second shot from Wolves from RAN, right into Ramsdale. This after a promising attack was spoilt after poor decision making by Semedo. Other than the goal, Ramsdale has had a quiet afternoon.

Not a match of high quality, nevertheless it;s the correct score line which is all important. at the moment.

Another shot from RAN, tamely wide and there’s the whistle.

HT Saints 0-1 Wolves

Elsewhere Ipswich 0-3 Forest

Ivan Juric looks very gloomy as he sits in his seat awaiting Wolves to take to the pitch, Soton went out early.

We’re off again.

0-2 and it’s Strand Larsen again. Great header for the first and extremely good strike into the bottom left hand corner …… defending was awful again. I’ll take that

A rare Saints attack who in ends with a good shot which Sa tips over, the corner is saved again by Sa, another corner - good goalkeeping. Next corner easily cleared and Bellegarde burst into action and runs the length of the pitch, 2 in the middle and a tame non shot come no cross floats over the bar!!

An Agbadou error leads to a bit of chaos and Andre blocks for a corner …. The cross and a free header - over the bar. Saints should have scored

67 gone - there’s definitely a lull in the performance the 5 minutes or so.

Sarabia and Guedes are now coming on, Bellegarde and Munetsi are coming off. Pereira attempts to freshen things up.

Gomes misses a real great chance but pulls it wide of the left hand post, this following great work and a good ball from Guedes. That would have wrapped things up

Terrible Saints play, leads to a 4 v2 to Wolves who conspired to waste the chance.

immediately up the other end, Southampton hit the post and the rebound is in the net 1-2.

We should be 3-0 up, instead cue a nervy last 15 plus added time

RAN falls to the floor with cramp - something that he seems to often do. Santi Bueno is on for him

Onuachu scored the Soton goal, had half a chance there again but blocked out.

Saints are doing their best to up the tempo but struggling to make clear opportunities. Strand Larsen and Semedo now are on the floor, cramp, injury or just wasting time?!!

87 gone

We can’t keep the ball in possession and giving Southampton some encouragement. This time Toti keeps the ball and the clock says 95

Sa collects the ball from an ill judged Saints long pass.

Full time, Southampton 1-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Screams of delight from the away fans, Boos from the home fans.

On a day when the result is everything and another Wolves win at St Mary’s, the performance wasn’t as confident as many would have liked, more workmanlike again but we missed some great opportunities to kill off Saints. Nevertheless the fans are celebrating, chanting Pereira’s name and likely to have learnt that Ipswich have lost 2-4 at home.

The gap is nine points and today, Wolves have done the job they needed to do.

9 point gap and the goal difference makes it effectively 10. How bad are Saints? Larsen took his goals well but rubbish defending, certainly for the first. Wolves were nowhere near their best but didn't have to be. Don't wish to take the gloss off the win however, and it was a big three points. COYW.

We made hard work of it but thats what wolves always seem to do, but it was all about the points so we have to be happy.
Pleased for strand larsen he took his chances well today and apparently he's been playing in pain with a broken hand, so fair play to him.
9 point gap 10 with goal difference, we all man united fans Sunday?

TBh when I saw both teams coming out of the tunnel it reminded me of this sorry sight emerging as they both fought over the offering of 3 points.

Three great points after a nervy second half. Same result as Liverpool got against them last week.
We’re clearly tighter than we were but some poor decisions and tactics. The boss has work to do during the break (I’ve lost track of how many of the team will be away)
