Match thread: Ipswich Town v Wolves KO 3pm 05.04.25

This is the first topflight season with Wolves and Ipswich Town both competing since our ill-fated 1983/84 season. Back then Ipswich did the double on us, 0-3 at Molineux and 3-1 at Portman Road and today Ipswich look to do the double again after their 2-1 win in Wolverhampton last December which spelt the overdue end of Gary O’Neil and the ridiculous scenes at full time with Cunha’s lack of control to include removing then throwing away the glasses of a Tractor Boy staff member. Utterly bizarre! Fast forward to today, this is the last match of Cunha’s additional suspension however Wolves will arrive in Suffolk feeling in a much better place than that fateful Molineux evening.

Is there such a thing as a twelve pointer in football, if there is then this is it?! Our hard fought home victory v West ham midweek extended our gap over Ipswich to 12 points, then a day later they carved out a fine win away to Bournemouth ….. gap back to nine. By the way, De Laps goal hit the back of the net like a rocket. Should we win today, the gap will be back up to twelve and surely with seven games left that will be that, they win and the it’s is reduced to six and the Wolves jitters will potentially flare up again! Perhaps we should take solace that under Pereira Wolves have amassed 10 points in the last six games to Ipswich’s four. Apparently if the league had started on February 1st we’d be 3rd!! What a mad stat.

The good news is that Wolves have no new injury issues, so Vitor has the same squad to pick from as on Tuesday plus Rodrigo Gomes and Guedes, both back after knocks. Will our manager go for the same starting line up. If he does it’ll be the same starting team for the fourth match in a row. Hopefully Stand Larsen can keep up his good goal scoring record today, perhaps adding to his three in two games? It’s worth noting that Ipswich have only kept one home clean sheet all season ….. there will be opportunities. Conversely it would be nice if Munetsi can get his shooting boots turned on, another two brilliant chances versus the Hammers completely fluffed, despite his good positional play. A mention for Joao Gomes and Andre, I thought they have been excellent of late, the former all over the pitch in the week and my personal man of the match.

Good luck to the manager and the players this afternoon and wish a happy away day to our fantastic travelling fans and hopefully in the sunshine too.

Everything crossed today, please leave your thoughts and comments in the thread as usual, unfortunately I may well struggle to provide a commentary today but will be keeping a close eye on developments. Finally, it’s the Grand National at 4pm, those who read regularly know I like a flutter …… Number 10 Stumptown, currently 10/1 and fourth in the market ….. you heard it here first!!

Need to grind out a result today as Ipswich will be battling for their survival so they will be ready to put everything on the line. They looked good in their last match so we cannot allow any complacency today, shoulders to the grindstone boys, it won't be pretty but I think we have the edge quality wise so should squeeze something out of this.

Really scary one after Ipswich beat Bournemouth but they have been dire all season and it is still a nine point gap so I suppose a draw would be enough.
Nice to start the same team again and I agree with everyone that Cuhna might have to work hard to get back in.
And I wonder if Tommy Doyle will ever get another Wolves start; it’s clear Pereira does not rate him for ninety minutes

A fantastic win and thoroughly deserved by all accounts.

32 points from 31 matches seemed impossible not so long ago. 12 points clear, it’s all over bar the shouting and the fat lady is taking the stage!!!

Well deserved by virtue of the second half performance.
Well fought lads and an invaluable three points.

Fantastic win. Safe now. Sounded from the Wolves radio commentary like very poor officiating and the usual VAR controversies

I can breath a little easier now that the gap has increased again. So much for 'Wolves will struggle without Cunha'. Well played lads.

Has anyone seen Stumptown? I thought we were going to blow it at half -time and I like the look of that Liam Delap, except when he scored, I didn't like him then. When their 'keeper messed up and saved on the line surely he had prevented a goal-scoring opportunity and should have been off. Must admit I'm not sure of the rule in a case like that. A different story in the second half. Joao Gomes man of the match for me, ably supported by Andre. My usual moan about VAR. I thought it was supposed to be speeded up this season but it takes as long as ever. Bringing that in is the worst thing for the sport they have done.

Decent highlights on MOTD and second on too …… a minor miracle in itself! Great to see the team engaged with one another and Gomes gave another great performance. Will be interesting to see if Cunha gets in for a start next week, or will Vitor keep with a balanced side for the fifth time. It was good to see Rodrigo getting on the pitch, he’s a great lad. Also what about Andre grabbing a supporters phone and doing a little selfie video …. Terrific!

Finally, Andy, Stumptown, yes very disappointing but I understand he went lame and was hampered twice at 3rd and 21st and pulled up after 3 out.Do you remember you namesake? Andy Pandy, 1977, leading by a mile, Bechers second time around? I remember it well, my Dad was crestfallen!

Anyway, back to football, Spurs next and I’ll be there next sunday. UTW

Yes, I remember Andy Pandy. Went down like a fat lad on a see-saw.
