Spurs blunted
By Ivybridge Wolf
April 20 2025

Does this stage of this  Wolves season count as some kind of an Indian Summer  …. In mid spring?! Off the back of four straight wins and improved performances, Wolves now have the opportunity to do two things not managed for 45-55 years. I’m not for jinxing anything, there will be plenty of work and endeavour required this afternoon, but should we win it’ll be the first league double over Manchester United since 1979/80  and our first five game winning streak since 1970. Counting. No. Chickens. Having said that, win, lose or draw today, the form and the Pereira effect forging a togetherness arguably not seen since Dr Nuno, is putting smiles back on supporter faces and a greater hope for the future. The scenes and celebrations after last Sunday’s comprehensive victory versus Spurs were excellent with Pereira and the boys hanging around for ages on the pitch to share the win with us fans. Nothing for granted, we all know that but a message to the team ……. Please keep it up!

It's not just past records to consider, a win will put us level on points with Manchester United (who currently hold a superior goal difference) and leapfrog Spurs (who play on Monday) and The Hammers who could only draw with Saints yesterday. Man Utd will not be a passive observer. They are off the back of a quite incredible and scintillating midweek European victory against Lyon, scoring three goals in the last six minutes of extra time to win 5-4 and set up an Europa league semi final with Athletic Bilbao. That kind of win, irrespective of league form will raise the Old Trafford pulses and belief against Wolves. It’ll be a tough afternoon, indeed they have lost just one versus Wolves in their last 13 home matches with Wanderers, nine of them won.

What of the team? If Vitor selects the same side again, it’ll be the fifth game in a row, however Bellegarde limped off last weekend and has been estimated as 50:50 in some reports. In the Spurs game, Bellegarde was substituted with Sarabia (who has featured very regularly under Pereira) when some supporter might have expected an earlier return by Cunha. Will Sarabia get the nod, or will this be the moment Cunha gets back into the starting line up? Last time we played Manchester United, Wolves fans will be unlikely to forget Cunha’s contribution and his goal, direct from a corner, and then the unselfish pass to Hwang which gave us a 2-0 home success.

Manchester United away remains a very worthy scalp and so whoever starts, the best of luck to the players and Vitor in what we hope will be an entertaining match and another battling and cohesive Wolves performance. The game kicks off at 2pm, though not being screened on live television. This site will hope to keep regular updates and The Molineux Way invites your comments and thoughts pre, during or post match.

As always, enjoy the match! Everything crossed.

UTW

Team are out:

Wolves XI: Sa, Semedo, Bueno, Agbadou, Toti, Ait-Nouri, Andre, J Gomes, Munetsi, Cunha, Strand Larsen.
Subs: Bentley, Doherty, Djiga, Traore, Doyle, R Gomes, Sarabia, Forbs, Mane.

Bellegarde not even on the bench, obviously the knock has been a bit worse than expected. Interested to see Santi Bueno has got the nod over the Doc.

COMB!!

If the game really mattered you can guess Doc might have started but Santi needs to grow in experience, and next to Aggie should cope with a clapped out ManUre. Bellegarde clearly still worse for wear.
We only need to win by four goals to overtake them 😄😎

Sa injured in warm up so looking like Bentley will be between the posts.

Quite a game for Bentley to come into, a bit distrupting to the team but as we know it’s a squad game. I have to say that Sa has been much more solid of late and distribution has improved.

Good luck to Bentley, good luck to the team.

Decent start from Wolves, just had a free kick in a very good position but come to nothing.

Some poor Wolves defending leads to an awful Mainoo dive in a woeful attenmpt to get a penalty

Another corner, whipped in by Erikkson well cleared from Bentley then a decent cross into the Wolves box evades everyone.

A rare free kick to Wolves as Cunha felled.

31 minutes have elapsed

Another free kick to Utd, Agbadou the culprit. 25 yards on the left hand angle, smashes it off the wall, corner which goes for a corner, another ball whipped into the box, but no takers and goal kick.

In amongst all of that, Bentley did well again and Toti is the player who diverted the free kick off. His head must hurt!

HT 0-0

Cat and mouse, not much in the way of clear chances. Wolves started very very but Man Utd have grown into the match and finished with more assurance on the ball. In the last 25 minutes or so we are struggling to maintain the ball in attacking positions.

Have to say the two Man Utd youngsters, Fredricson and Amass are playing very well …. Unfortunately.

A Vitor team talk desperately needed.

Fantastic. I love beating Man Utd. Full credit to Bentley, with the lack of action he's had this season he played well. There was some great defending out there. Santiago slotted in seamlessly and I thought Toti possibly out shone Agbadou on this occasion, not saying Agbadou played badly. Their boys didn't take much persuading to go down at times but what a great goal. If only Sarabia was more consistent but fair play to him on this occasion. Six unbeaten and five wins on the bounce. I know the teams we've played in that run haven't been the best that the Premiership has to offer but top marks to everybody. Unbelievable. The double over Man Utd. Yippee.

Not the best of games but we walk away with the 3 points after a fantastic free kick from sarabia.
Wow 5 wins on the bounce, you couldn't ever imagine that happening earlier in the season.
Vitor and the boys deserve a lot of credit for turning the season around.
Now shi and fosun need to back the manager and team and push on next season.
Will it happen? Who knows we will have to wait and see but vitor deserves backing after the job he has done.
Great Easter weekend, love to beat cocky manure, and a top flight double over them since 1979 makes it even sweeter.
Happy days!
