Match Thread: Wolves v Everton 7.45pm 23.9.2025 LC 3rd round

Do it again Strand
By Ivybridge Wolf

Here we go again, three days after Wolves’ tepid home defeat versus a Leeds side who previously hadn’t scored a goal from open play, Wolves host Everton in a repeat of the recent league fixture, which of course, Everton won 3-2 but at a canter. Funny how down the years we have and still retain the ability to offer generosity to sides that otherwise couldn’t hit a barn door?!

The League Cup isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, though realistically it’s one of only two competitions we can win, but Wolves winning anything right now doesn’t seem a very realistic prospect! Nevertheless the second round victory over West Ham, due largely to Strand Larsen, remains our only win this season with 19,561 who pitched up to Molineux that night. Sadly, I’d be surprised if we make 14,000 tonight, as ticket sales look poor (even at reduced prices) and apathy is setting in. Things are not well at Molineux, far from it.

The defeat versus Leeds was pretty abject. A cracking opening goal overtaken by mistakes a plenty, poor defending, losing the ball for fun and less than efficient finishing telling the tale of this sorry season so far. Within loss number five, there were a few plus points, Krejci and Hugo Bueno were notably exceptions to the bang below par efforts, but the stark reality is that we are handing wins to the opposition for fun. We sit 20th in the table, I don’t think many Wolves fans could argue with that?

Where are we going as a club? What is the direction? ‘Down’ is the cry of many though were that to become reality, where do Fosun and Jeff see us? Where do they see themselves for that matter?

Even so, a cup match is an opportunity to perhaps pump up the chest and seek progression. We need a win, we need that victory to enhance a bit of self-belief and confidence both in the players and supporters. We really need something before travelling down to Spurs on Saturday.

As for the line up, It is very difficult to predict a staring 11, it’s tricky to guess who will play in the league at the moment, never mind the cup. Let’s leave it to Vitor and see what happens, though I hope he goes reasonably strong ….. what I mean is established players ….. okay, they haven’t worked yet, but they might ….. oh well, let’s go experimental instead then! You never know Moyes might go for youth?!

With a 7.45pm kick off and live on the telly. I’ll be down the local ale house with the Ivybridge Wolves lads, hoping for the best, fearing the …….. well, you know! It’s at least an excuse for a beer and sooth the furrowed brows of those who made the trip up last Saturday. A self help group if you like.

Keeping everything crossed for a good performance and maybe even a sneaky win, good luck to the lads. Please leave thoughts in the thread as you see fit?!!

UTW!!!

The tin pot cup and the Everton reserves have arrived in town. Start your engines gentlemen - the prize of going out to Man City reserves awaits if we make it to the latter stages

Well the group therapy worked, lots of gallows humour awaiting a Wolves capitulation which never came. A couple worrying moments after Grealish and Ndiaye come on but overall a refreshing change to see Wolves get a deserved win against a decent Everton starting line up. Bl00dy ‘ell even Munetsi’s radar was working this evening.

Great to see a nice confident finish from Arokodare, we thought he’d smash it but a lovely chip to kill the game off.

Well done to the team, Spurs on Saturday evening, back to reality or is there a shimmer of a spark after tonight? Whatever, nice to enjoy a win and in the hat.

Early days and I hope I'm not putting a curse on him but to me Krejci looks invaluable. Calm on the ball and doesn't seem to panic. Started with a back four. Good to see Doherty back in and, fair do's, Santiago was fairly solid. Apart from one bad clearance Johnstone again did well. Andre looked like something back to his best. Still not sure about Arias although it was a good volley which led to Munetsi's goal which he took well, and as you all know, I've never doubted him. We were not too convincing in the second half and I was happy to see the second goal go in, again a good finish from Arokodare, hopefully giving him a bit of confidence. Wembley here we come.

Crowd was 18,758, swelled by an Everton following which sold all of their ticket allocation (3,000 approx).
