Irrespective of league position, or which league for that matter, the FA Cup remains one of only two trophies Wolves (and many other clubs) can possibly win. I would say realistically win, perhaps not this season! Nevertheless, today, we have to go strong. After the 3rd round draw, I was (more than half) joking that this fixture was a real banana skin ……. for Shrewsbury Town. However since we have become harder to beat in the last month (firmly disregarding the Brentford match), tables have turned and the banana skins are all over the Wolves penalty area! Chris Sutton has predicted us to win 5-0. Oh dear.
This thirds round cup derby kicks off at Molineux at 12.15 to satisfy television needs. It’s the third time Wolves have met them in the FA Cup, the last in 2019 when to Old Gold needed a replay to progress, the first in the FA Cup quarter final at Molineux in 1979 when over 40,000 saw Wolves secure a semi-final place on a very boggy pitch. Hopefully the Shrews will bring along a terrific following to cheer their side on, a team who are really struggling not to drop out of the football league structure, just two points above the relegation zone, I wish them every success to avoid that possibility. On paper, this should be a walk over, shouldn’t it?!! Wolves have managed to dispatch 7 of the last 8 FA Cup matches against lower division team, the only exception is the Coventry quarter final ….. a day many would still like to forget.
Every year the same questions about team selection are asked, what will the manager do for the cup. Over the years Wolves have seen opposite ends of the spectrum, from very strong sides to a team of reserves, this year Rob Edwards gets the choice. Edwards has already said that the players who contributed to a very well fought point versus Everton are available for today and that he wants to maintain the momentum with no wholesale change. Many Wolves fans will hope this is the case when teams are announced!
Wolves form of late provides a sense of optimism for today despite the opposition likely to set up defensively, let’s face it that’s what Wolves have been up to for much of the time! The team appears to be gelling in a way that hasn’t been seen during most of the season. Another creditable point midweek, not a classic match by any means, but a battling display to come back from being 1-0 down at half time against Everton. Wolves were the better side in the second half, and that was when it was 11v11. Edwards has suggested we missed a trick when the Toffee’s were down to ten players …… then nine! The confidence drawn must be taken into this match today to boss the pitch and give us all the result we want, no slip ups. Everything crossed, players and fans alike, there will be no counting of chickens just yet.
As mentioned, the early kick off will be screened live on TNT and discovery + , and so another scramble to see who is able to watch it. Good luck to the lads, wishing for a good cup tie and maybe a decent cup run? Is that too much to expect?

Subs | Bentley, Lima, Mosquera, H Bueno, Chirewa, Lopez, R Gomes, Mane, Arokodare.
Not a bad side, should do enough, though I would have liked to see Mane and Tolu starting. No Sa at all. One real positive is to see Rodrigo Gomes back in the squad, a very good player.
Great ball from Krejci to Hwang on the left who advanced into the box, squared to Larsen , who with his back to goal, back heals it into the net. A very nice finish.
The Shrews had played well to that point.
Great ball from lLarsen, nice run in on goal by Arias who slots away nicely. 2-0
What an absolutely dreadful error from Harrison, the Shrews 19 year old keeper. All he had to do was clear the ball, but with absolutely nobody around him he mislaid his pass to Larsen who calmly pass the ball into an empty net.
Wolves deservedly widen their lead, but I feel sorry for the keeper.
Mane puts in a peach of a cross to Larsen, looked like it would hit the back of the net but a great save from the teenage keeper denies a 5th Wolves goal.
Full credit to the keeper after his first half clanger.
Lopez, brilliant shot bounces with pace off the post, Tolu collects and a sharp pass into Rodrigo Gomes to finish with ease to mark his return to the side.
Not sure how Andre didnt get a yellow there but from the free kick a quick break sees Mane place a lovely pass to Wolfe who squares to Tolu ….. he just could’ve miss.
6-1 Not that Salop were poor, just shows the difference between the bottom of the 4th Division and the bottom of the Premiership. Good to see the crowd that the Shrews. brought with them.
It may not prove much but, no disrespect to Shrewsbury intended, you can't do much more. The most you can do is win in a canter by a big score so in that respect, well done chaps. Pleased he chose a strong side, I would have chosen a stronger one. We all know we're going down so why not have a good go at the Cup? Nice to see Rodrigo come on and score and now Strand Larsen, congrats on the hat-trick, is Cup-tied so whether that has any bearing on a move I don't know. Mind you, Forest are supposed to interested in him and they've been knocked out.
Seven hour time difference was too much for a 12:15 start but saw the second half. We had a squeaker for one of my Molineux Cup visits by Shrews a couple years ago (a midweeker we only just survived)
This was better.
Nice farewell to JSL?
A few on the mix saying JSL is a quality player based on a hat trick against a league 2 team. I remember years ago an elderly relative saying football fans are mainly thick - quite hard to argue with it.
I wonder if this upturn in fortunes, however brief it may be, has anything to do with the return of Rui Silva as coach. The two things seem to have coincided. Along with Munetsi being injured.

Good point, it also makes you wonder how much of the success was down to him rather than the soon to be sacked ( yet again ) Nuno.
