OH DEAR. As far as reports go, this
will probably be the most depressing report since losing in the Play-Off Semi
Final to Norwich City two seasons ago. Wolves today were thrashed by Southampton
at Molineux and relegation looms...
No shirking the truth. No masking up and
no biased reporting follows....
Since this club were promoted to the
Premiership in May 2004, things have gone horribly wrong. Wolves Manager Dave
Jones was given a pathetic £5m to sign players with in the summer and our fate
is finally looking certain.
The majority of the players on show today
have been regulars throughout this season and it is with thanks to those players
that today's game had any bearing on the final outcome of this season.
The squad we have in the majority finished
5th in division one last season. Just a few players, none of whom bring us real
quality, have been used to tart up the side which won at the Millennium Stadium
in May. This club should have be relegated by now, but the 'never say die'
attitude the players have shown has been terrific.
Wolves have shown fight. What they lack in
quality they make up in effort and the win against Manchester United has given
us all something to cheer about in a season which is now finally petering out
towards relegation.
Southampton today tore at a very tired
Wolves side and they were good for their four goals.
After terrific, but heartbreaking,
performances against Liverpool and Chelsea in our previous two games Wolves went
into this game looking physically and mentally tired.
A defensive mix-up early in the game gave
Beattie a chance to steer a low right-footed drive past Paul Jones in the Wolves
goal. The goal came from a defensive mistake, but naming those players, who have
given their all for this club would not be fair.
Just ten minutes after the re-start and
Southampton doubled their lead. The ball was swung in from the left and
Lundekvam managed to steer the ball past Jones from six yards.
The second goal gave Wolves a little bit
of life and Camara pinched one for Wolves after 72 minutes, however it was not
enough.
A Kevin Phillips double in injury time
sealed our fifth home defeat of the season, our fourth consecutive defeat and
the tenth goal conceded in the last 3 games.
We may not be good enough but we can all
hold our heads up high knowing we gave it our best. It's not certain relegation
for Wolves, but the last seven games will probably be our final seven in the
Premiership for a while.
