SO SO near, but yet so far. Wolvers
were just seconds from making history at Manchester City on Saturday, but a last
gasp Shaun Wright-Phillips goal ended all hope.
Seconds - That was the margin
between three deserved points and one single point. Wolves were just seconds
away from making history and securing their first ever away win in the
Premiership, but another last minute goal was enough to kill all hope.
As the final whistle blew,
the atmosphere in the away end at the very impressive City Of Manchester Stadium
was a strange one. Nobody could believe that the win had slipped away, but
nobody was surprised. It sounds like a contradiction, but it was a feeling of
inevitable shock.
Dave Jones made several
changes from the side which was thrashed by Southampton a week previous. Mark
Clyde replaced Denis Irwin, Carl Cort replaced Kenny Miller, Shaun Newton
replaced Vio Ganea, Colin Cameron replaced the suspended Alex Rae whilst Isaac
Okoronkwo made a surprise league debut in place of Jody Craddock.
Wolves could have been two up
early on, but after 25 minutes the score read 'Man City 0 Wolves 2'.
It was the first time Wolves
had scored in the first quarter of a match all season, but the goal was a
stunning effort by the impressive Kennedy who smashed the ball home from 25
yards and less than five minutes later Carl Cort knocked the ball into the net
after a defensive blunder by the home side.
Typical Wolves defending then
saw the scores leveled with thanks to Anelka and Sibierski. Anelka lost his
marker to head home from close range before an almost identical goal from Sibierski
evened the scores.
Missing chances has cost
Wolves this season, so it was no surprise when Cameron saw his penalty saved by
James following Dunne's push on Henri Camara.
However fifteen minutes
remained and Wolves scored what everyone thought would have been the winning
goal. Mark Kennedy saw his free-kick saved by James but the ball fell to Camara
who scored his third goal in three games.
Although as we know, Wolves
were killed in the final seconds. Mark Kennedy cleared a Man City corner and
Shaun Wright-Phillips drove low past Paul Jones.
Will we ever win away?
