WOLVES signed off from the 2004/05 season with a comfortable victory over Sheffield United and broke the seasons record for the amount of games without defeat. WOLVES 4-2 SHEFFIELD UNITED

 

Wolves made it 18 games unbeaten and one defeat in 25 after disposing of Sheffield United on a sunny but windswept Molineux Stadium.

The unbeaten run goes back to the 4th January and is the longest unbeaten run in the division. Ironically the previous holders were Wigan and it was Wigan who beat Wolves 2-0 on that day at the beginning of the year.

Glenn Hoddle named an unchanged side from the one which beat Reading last week and it was player of the season Joleon Lescott who opened the scoring.

The impressive defender tapped home from close range after Kenny had spilled a Lee Naylor free kick.

Sheffield United attacked well though and levelled the scores just a couple of minutes later. Quinn it was who drove high into the roof of the net from the edge of the area, Michael Oakes stood no chance.

Sheffield United then hit the woodwork but failed to test Oakes and when Leon Clarke had latched on to Millers through-ball to give Wolves the lead again mid-way through the first half it looked as if the game was in the over.

However United had other ideas and Andy Gray directed a low angled shot across Michael Oakes and into the bottom corner of the net eight minutes before the break.

Hoddle made two changes at the interval and on came Kevin Cooper for Olofinjana and Mikkell Bischoff for Rob Edwards and within five minutes Wolves were leading for the third time.

A long ball from Naylor found Miller who steered a ball out to Cooper. The former Wimbledon man then cut inside before firing past Kenny at his near post.

Wolves were looking dangerous and few could argue over the scoreline when the fourth went in.

Good work from Ricketts down the left allowed Miller to tap home his 19th goal of the season from 3 yards and complete the scoring for this campaign.

It was Miller who scored the first goal of the season for Wolves and it was Miller who scored the last. The club have failed in their attempt for automatic promotion but with Hoddle hopefully set to sign and with an eighteen match unbeaten run under the belt, next season could be much rosier.
