Wolves go out with a win in final home game.

WOLVES won for the first time in 7 matches against relegated Brighton and Hove Albion in the final home game of the season. Kenny Miller scored the only goal of the game from the Penalty spot in the first half.

As the players walked round the pitch in their so-called lap of honour following the final whistle some of them must have been wondering if they had played their final game for Wolves at Molineux.

The goalscorer Kenny Miller is the only player who knows for sure he won't be part of the Wolves squad next year as the Scottish International signed a contract with Celtic at the beginning of the year.

For the likes of Oakes, Postma, Ince, Ganea, Cameron, Kennedy, Anderton, Ross and Ndah however it's a different story. All are out of contract and the majority are on wages which Wolves would not be able to afford due to the parachute money from the Premiership season being stopped.

Another man who will also be looking over his shoulder is the boss Glenn Hoddle. Again he was the centre of attention at Molineux as disgruntled fans chanted for his head. His programme notes won't help his cause either. The Wolves boss admitted he took "full responsibility" for his side's failure to hit the minimum objective of the play-offs and went on to say he failed to accept the comments made by Jez Moxey the previous week in which the Wolves chief branded the season a "complete disaster".

Wolves fans chanted "We want Hoddle out" as his side won their first match in seven games. Wolves lead at the break thanks to a 31st minute penalty by Kenny Miller. The Wolves striker - who won he fans player of the season award - struck the ball high into the roof of the net after Brighton's McShane had handled in the area.

It was a first half which other than the goal could be left forgotten. Terrible defending should have allowed the visitors to have been at least level at the break, but the Albion forward line could not take any of the few chances the Wolves defence awarded them.

Wolves have picked up a habit of late of conceding in the second half, but the second half at a sunkissed Molineux was a different story. Wolves controlled the game and should easily have put the game to bed on several occasions.

Arsenal loanee Jeremie Aliadiere lashed a 20 yard effort against the post before Colin Cameron's 25 yard free kick smashed against the upright. Miller and Frankowski both had efforts saved before Cort (who replaced Frankowski) was unable to direct the ball home from three yards after neat build-up play by Miller.

Brighton's only real efforts after the break were Paul Reid's 20 yard lob which hit the crossbar and a Kazim-Richards stinging effort which was parried away by Oakes who had replaced the injured Postma at the interval.

It was a game in which Wolves could have scored 5 but in the end won by the smallest of margins. The Wolves crowd chanted "that's why we're staying down" as chance after chance went begging. How right they were.
