Chris Gayle's comments about the viability of Test cricket compared to T20 have touched off a storm of controversy, with the hard hitting Windies batsman drawing fire from all around for his disregard for the long format.
Having come off a short but highly lucrative stint with Kolkata Knight Riders in the second season of IPL, Chris Gayle has said he doesn't care if Test cricket died.
Gayle is paid close to a million dollars for a month of cricket by IPL, which is several times what the West Indies board pays him for playing the Test and ODI cricket for most of the year. He is also the captain of the West Indies team for all cricket formats.
It is hardly any surprise that he feels no love for the strenuous longer form of the game. Even in the West Indies, the stadiums are deserted during Tests, and the West Indies is ranked among the lowest teams in a format they dominated in the 1970s and 80s.
However, he has been slammed for a weak work ethic by West Indies as well as the always outspoken Aussie players and ex-players.
Whether Test cricket survives in the long term remains to be seen. But cricketers who specialize in the long or short format are a sure thing. Already, one team has suffered in IPL for consisting of "Test players".
A marathon versus the dash, French Open versus Wimbledon -- whether the long format survives will depend on the revenue and audiences generated by the game.

Im positive that test cricket will remain the pinnacle of the sport for a long time yet.
I dont even think we'll see 50 over cricket come to an end. We'll get to a point where 7 and 5 match ODI's become extinct though...it'll be more along the lines of 3 ODI's and 5 T20's.
There's too much money for boards to make by juggling all three formats for them to ever drop 50-over cricket from tour schedules.
I'd have respectede Gayle's views alot more if he had stuck by them, instead of spending the last few days trying to clumsily retract his way out of it.

I see no controversy from Gayle.
He was honest and spoke about his priorities.....and commies following cricket fell out of their seat.
Professional sportsmen will think abput money especially poor Westindian and Kiwi brothers, who made almost nothing from endorsements

and as a reaction some big Commies went on air asking for Flinotff and KP to repay the "Namak ka Karz" for the investment done in them....while the small ones wrote cover page articles for a prominet India cricket discussion and message board

But, once the aam junta has had its cricket fix -- at a time and duration of its choosing -- what will convince them to turn out to stadiums (and miss work) for a long drawn out 5-day affair? (which may not even give a result)

The comparison was more with a slow format (French Open) against a fast one (Wimbledon). Not quite an accurate parallel, but the idea was to look at another sport with different formats.

since Indian Public decides cricket money matter , I think Test cricket will be like "Classical Indian Music" and T20 like new rap/pop/hindi movie song. so we will have classical show like in "pune festival" where real music lovers and singer attend but daily commercial ads/aam janta will watch listen to "SAREGAMA" or new movie song.
There is scope for both real music is always classical but aam janta like paanwala/riksha driver will play/listen "TUm to tahre pardesi , sath kya nibhvonge"

I think the average Indian undertsands and relishes test cricket.
Even before the T20 came....test cricket did not die at the hands of odi...despite a lot of apprehensions, fears and doomsday predictions.
T20 and through IPL will gain the markeshare at the cost of ODIs and some Ekta Kapoor serials

Haven't heard much about these, Birbal. But if Tiger Woods doesn't play it, then they can't be formats at the top level.. equivalent of "gully cricket" maybe?

It will always come down to money. But test cricket will survive in the long run and so will the 50 over game. In reality, in monetary term, grounds will take more revenue of a long days cricket than a couple of hours. 20/20 is in at the moment but that will not last forever.

The T20 format was probably long overdue in cricket anyway, after a 100+ years of deadly serious Test matches, with its slow pace and countless regulations. T20 has the potential to popularize the game in worldwide and bring in a lot more $$$ for the players as well. Test cricket will always remain strong in the established countries. But if ICC play their cards well, T20 will pick up very quickly among new countries, and we will see a lot more competitive teams, like football, instead of the usual 7 or 8 that we see in Test cricket.
