During the final ODI of the recent India versus New Zealand series when India entered the field to defend its 260 odd run total I did a double take, as many other fans probably did when I saw Saroj and Devaki and Pritiben as the names on the Jerseys.... Here is the story behind that. Very nice gesture by the players and BCCI

The initiative is aimed to highlight the contributions of mothers and women in everyday life

In a gesture that gladdened many a heart, Team India members sported jerseys with their mothers’ name as a part of a special initiative in the fifth and final match of the Paytm ODI series against New Zealand. As the players strutted out at Visakhapatnam’s lush green ACA-VDCA stadium, their respective names made way for their mothers as Star India partnered with the BCCI in highlighting their campaign ‘NayiSoch.’

At the toss, India ODI captain MS Dhoni underlined the role a mother plays in every individual’s life. “What’s important is that it is an initiative to appreciate the contribution of mothers. If you ask me, I was always emotionally connected with my mother. It is not like dads are not there, they are there. But we don’t appreciate a mother’s contribution in the way, we have to.

“It is good that it has been put on a public platform. Often we talk about soldiers and get patriotic on 26th January (Republic Day of India) and 15th August (Independence Day). What is important is to get up every day and thank them for what they have been doing and we need to appreciate the contribution of mothers in the same way.”
