Cardiff City have announced the sad news that defender, David Hughes has been forced to retire at the age of just 25 due to injury. Hughes has been plagued with knee problems since joining City from Shrewsbury for £500,000 in the 2000/2001 season.

The former Wales Under-21 international signed for the Bluebirds for £500,000 from Shrewsbury Town during the 2000/2001 promotion season, but a series of operations to his knee have seen him struggle to get a decent run together in the first team. Hughes only made 14 first team appearances for the Bluebirds but looked a bright prospect and in my personal opinion could have done a job at this level and the level above. At just 25 years-of-age it's very sad to see such a bright prospect bring forced into retirement. Hughes has agreed a termination package offered by the club and is no longer at the club. City boss, Lennie Lawrence was deeply saddened by Hughes' retirement, and at losing a player who looked to have real potential. "It is a sad day for any player when they are forced out of football by injury" said Lawrence. "But when it involves a young man with massive promise like David it is doubly shattering for the player and the club." he added. I would like to wish David Hughes the best of luck for whatever career he decides to take up in the future. |
