If for whatever reason we don't find a place in the set up for a bloke like Dean Richards, I think once again we may live to regret it.

He can come in along side Richard Hill, Phil Davies etc, he can only add to the type of player we would be able to recruit at Worcester, from what I can see after the obvious expectation of success, the next number one requirement is the quality, reputation and track record of the coach. Crowds and Statia don't appear to be a major factor, Saracens won the league with an average crowd of 7,800 last season and they play at Watford Football Club.

It can't be money because of the salary cap !!!!!

If we had a successful team, I mean playing for a top 4 place and make a reasonable fist of it in the cups, Worcester could build a 15000 capacity stadium and fill in every week. They that success would allow the management to consider expanding the stadium to the 20,000 suggested capacity.

I'm afraid though, bottom half finish every year will keep us exactly where we are at the moment, and have been virtually every season in the premiership.

We can pontificate as much as we like, but if we can't retain players that we want to Wood, possible Mullen, Garvey & Benjamin we will be listening too and spouting the same retoric that we have had to listen to on our previous 6 seasons in the top flight.

If we want to progress to the top, we have to make bold decisions when they are needed, If the article has any substance that Cecil Duckworth wished he had recruited Dean Richards 8 years ago, well the club may be given a second chance .... so take it.

Remember the ideals and reteric of Mike Ruddock that we had to listen too for 3 seasons, it was a 3 year slow death it was apparent after his first season, but the club miustakenly decided to stick with him and appeared inept, or unwilling to take the decision that may have saved us.

Lets not get smug because we are 3 wins + ahead of Newcastle, they will fight for their lives, and the new coaching set up has a reasonable track record behind it.
We lose to Sale and Quins away and Falcons turn over Irish at home, they get a result against us at Sixways and the nerves begin the jangle.

I am not being a profit of doom, and before the 'Blindly get behind the team brigade' come out, we are all committed to the cause and spend our time following the team around the country but are Hill and Davies good enough to take us too and maintain a consstent position at the top half of the table, I for one don't think so. Would the club benifit from Richards being at the club, of course we would. Could he assist Hill and Davies of course he could, could there be a possibility that he would one day take over the reins at Sixways .. absolutely if necessary.

We have a fantastic set up at Worcester, probably one of the if not the best set up in the league, but have we ever, ever given any indication we could break into the top half of the league .... the answer is No.

For once lets be bold and take a decision that would potentially take the club to the next level.

Great post with some very well put points. Still not comfortable with the overall idea though.

If dialogue has continued between the relevant parties during his enforced sabatical, then it is most likely that he will become part of Sixways once the ban is ended, having potentially been part of the fabric for a while longer than most may have thought.

He is not a Warriors panacea however, and because of past excellence in coaching, this will not necessarily mean the same will be emulated at Sixways, as seems to be expected. Before someone says, "we're not saying that"' I think these initial posts seem to be expecting it.

Presumably he'll be given a season free from blame if he does arrive in August, so let's see what he can do with a supposed Sows ear of a team first, before he can make his mark and attract others.

Why can't Richard Hill emulate the success that Dean Richards has had. Richard Hill managed to take Bristol, with much less money and resource to Europe. Now he's got the resource/money behind him why don't we think he could take Worcester all the way, once he has the players he selects. Not all big clubs need big name coaches, quins for example. I for one believe RH can take Worcester all the way. Dean Richards has had his success, RH has his to come. I 100% back the current set-up.

Also Albion- Saracens success is in part due to the fact that they clearly pay well over the salary cap and the most in the premiership...

I tend to agree with Albionwarrior in that younger players do appear to be moving to clubs because of perceived quality of coaching rather than any monetary consideration.
I have no doubt that Dean would strengthen our coaching team.
I just question the role he would step into.
I may be way off the mark here, but my impression over the past couple of seasons is that Charlie Little seems to have extended his own role at Sixways to involve contracts and overseeing recruitment. In short, some of the tasks that a Director of Rugby would take on.
I don't see it as any attempt at "Empire building" more that he has been filling an existing void. My feeling is Cecil would love him to come with Charlie, maybe, stepping back a little ?
I'm not saying it would be a case of Turkeys voting for Christmas but the impact of the arrival a high profile DOR needs to be considered.
Perhaps a safer bet might be an initial "Geech-like" consultancy position ?

Do most players move to Sarries because of Mark McCall? Er probably not IMO. He was no genius at Ulster, but has run with what he inherited from Brendan Ventner.

Cynically, I expect that a number are moving to Sarries for the large pay cheque, as well as the fact thAt they have part of the current Elite coaching team in their ranks, who could always make recommendations, which may be to their advantage.

Although Sarries have done well again this season, it cannot be a coincidence that the sheer number of new and existing caps coming from that club is benefiting from Farrell's involvement with both set ups....

IMO to find a place for Dean Richards would mean saying goodbye to Richard Hill, and probably Phil Davies. There is only room for one boss in the set up and I'm not sure that either Richard or Dean would be able to work under the other. It would certainly be harsh on Hilly to make him second fiddle, when, as Charlie Little says, he and Phil have done everything asked of them so far.

We have had enough coaching upheavals over recent years (pretty much every season there has been a significant change) and we need some stability, IMHO.

We may have missed our chance with Deano some years back, and suffered as a result, but we should not compound the error by trying to bring him in at the wrong time and throwing everything up in the air again, just as we seem to be making progress.

Whatever you do, do it safely!

On another tack, I understand that Deano was instrumental in the decision to offer Hilly the post here!

It has been reported that Hilly was earlier given an additional 12 months extension to his contract which takes him to the end of next season (although Ruddock experienced a similar scenario at the beginning of his last season)

All in all, given the contract extension - if honoured - it would appear unlikely that Deano will appear here in the short term...

Could he not come to us in some sort of role similar to Steve Diamond? Albeit slightly closer to the pitch on match day.

Sounds like too many Chiefs and not enough Indians, with Dean as well. Surely salary is needed in on field resource, more than extending the Backroom?

Suppose it depends on priority at the moment SB. If we're still in money saving mode than you may well be right, but if we gamble and he brings further success than finances could benefit in the long run.

All speculation at this point anyhow.

Going back to the comment about DR being at the Stoop on Saturday - I believe that he was also at Sixways for the game with Quins. If I remember correctly, he was said to be Quins' guest on that occasion.

Something was made of that - and no doubt the gossip will continue for a while yet despite denials from Sixways.

Something that occured to me. Given the nature of his ban (i.e. can not do anything related to rugby), whether this also precludes him from entering formal discussions with any clubs regarding contracts before the ban is completed.
Just a thought...

I recall from the details of his ban that he may attend games but not in any area normally not open to the paying public. Certainly when he was at 6ways for the quins game he sat in a ticketable, ie paying, seat.

As to having discussions with various parties about future employment, to try and ban him from doing this would contravene UK employment law, and in all probabability EU Human Rights legislation if he chose to take it there.

All we need to do is see if he is at Sixways on Friday..simples

TVM, you'd expect the RFU to be on the pedantic side when it comes to filling in the small print I suppose!

I guess if he was spotted in the NE and ends up there, he does have experience of escaping from The Championship....just not in the current format.
