Jake Garside’s Last-Gasp Try Snatches Victory
for Warriors Against Caldy

In a pulsating contest at Paton Field, The Warriors produced a dramatic late twist as Jake Garside crossed for a last-minute winning try — the only time his side led all afternoon — to snatch a thrilling victory from Caldy, who had looked set to hold on after a defiant defensive display.

For much of the second half, Caldy appeared to have done enough. Their dogged defensive line and a string of canny time-wasting tactics at the breakdown frustrated the Warriors, who dominated possession and territory after the break but struggled to find a clinical edge. The visitors pounded away through phase after phase, only to be repelled by a wall of gold-and-black shirts and their own mounting catalogue of errors.

Great clubhouse and very welcoming

The first half told a similar story of missed opportunities. The Warriors’ attack created openings but failed to capitalise on them, spurning three gilt-edged chances — each one easier than the last. Culminating with a platinum opportunity to score on the stroke of half time - It was the kind of profligacy that would have embarrassed a schoolboy side, leaving the coaching staff fuming as Caldy went into the break with a narrow but deserved lead.

As the second half wore on, Caldy slowed the tempo masterfully. Scrum resets, extended line-out preparations, and a glacial pace to the rucks all combined to eat away at the clock, much to the irritation of the travelling supporters. The Warriors’ frustration began to show, with handling errors and poor decision-making creeping into their play just as they seemed poised to strike.

It seems churlish to highlight the missed penalties from the referee at scrum time. The Caldy props on the opposite side to the ref were binding on the arm every scrum. Highlighted by the binding when the referee came over to the opposite side in an exaggerated lifted bind on the shirt. The Caldy players were constantly shaking their heads at the referee mumbling at him and throwing their arms in the air.

But sport has a habit of punishing wastefulness and rewarding persistence. Deep into stoppage time, with the referee checking his watch and The Warriors hammering away one last time, a slick move down the blindside finally prised Caldy open. Jake Garside, alert to the smallest of gaps, darted over in the corner to spark wild celebrations. The conversion sealed it, giving The Warriors their first and only lead — and the victory.

For Caldy, it was heartbreak. They had tackled themselves to a standstill and looked certain to claim a memorable win. For The Warriors, it was relief mixed with redemption after 80 minutes of frustration and squandered chances.

As the final whistle blew, Garside was mobbed by teammates — the hero of a game The Warriors almost contrived to lose, but somehow found a way to win.
