PEDAL IT TO HELP A HEART

(Worcester Rugby Club players help launch Hearts First Worcester Bike Ride)

Thinus Delport, Drew Hickey and Thomas Lombard of Worcester Rugby Club this week called on people to get pedalling to keep vulnerable hearts beating as the BHF launches the Hearts First Worcester Bike Ride.  The ride takes place on Sunday 5th of June and kicks off Help a Heart Week (4-12 June), the charity’s annual fundraising campaign.

The Hearts First Worcester Bike Ride starts from Worcester Rugby Club and takes a 30 mile route through the north of the county, taking in Droitwich Spa and Bromsgrove, with a 10 mile option available for families with young children.

As Gill Burrows, Event Organiser for the BHF says:

“With a choice of routes everyone is welcome to take part in the Hearts First Worcester Bike Ride.  Make it a day out for the whole family.  Encourage friends and work colleagues to take part or simply challenge yourself to complete the route.    You don’t have to be super fit to take part.  It doesn’t matter how long it takes.  What matters is that you take part, get your own heart pumping and raise funds to help us keep vulnerable hearts beating.”

Now in its second year, the BHF is hoping to build on the success of last year’s cycle ride which attracted nearly 200 riders and raised just under £8,000 for the charity’s life-saving research.

Last month, Worcester Rugby Club received the first of 79 life-saving defibrillators awarded by the BHF as part of the National Defibrillator Programme funded via the Big Lottery Fund.

Help a Heart Week will this year remind people that heart disease does not discriminate between men and women. The reality is this:

•   Heart and circulatory disease will kill over 2,400 women during Help a Heart Week

•   One in three women are killed by heart and circulatory disease

•   Coronary heart disease claims the lives of over four times more women than breast cancer

Yet despite these staggering statistics women of all ages remain largely unaware of the risks heart disease poses to their health, leaving too many hearts and families in crisis.

People across the country will be supporting Help a Heart Week by taking part in fundraising events.  The BHF hopes that people across Worcestershire will support it by getting on their bikes and peddling to help hearts in crisis.

It costs just £10 for adults, £5 for under 16s and £30 for a family to enter the Hearts First Worcester Bike Ride with prizes awarded for the highest sponsorship raised.
