Meghann Shaughnessy wins fourth meeting with Dokic

Nineteen year old Jelena Dokic didn’t look that eager to win the fourth WTA meeting between herself and her 23 year old opponent from Scottsdale Arizona Meghann Shaughnessy

In previous meetings Dokic never lost a set, now she was 4-0 down in the first set in no time. Shaughnessy won the first set 6-2 after breaking Dokic’s first two serves and holding her own by placing her serve through the middle of the court. Dokic didn’t seem to have an answer to Shaughnessy’s first serves.

The lean build Shaughnessy didn’t have any problems on her own serve and was never threatened by the way Dokic was playing. Meghann placed eleven aces on the other side of the net throughout the match most of them were hit inside court.

In the second set things looked like they were going the same for Shaughnessy, no real resistance from Jelena Dokic and good play by Meghann Shaughnessy. Shaughnessy held her form in serving and could break Dokic once for the lead. Only when serving for the match at 5-4 Shaughnessy was facing some resistance from Dokic who could fight off three match points. This was the only game where Shaughnessy’s serve led her down a little bit, a good first serve on her fourth match point got her the victory when Dokic shot the ball wide. Leaving the scoreboard with 6-2 6-4 for the American from Scottsdale Arizona who celebrated this victory as if it were her third WTA title already.
