Davenport storms through as Schnyder exits

Vera Zvonareva and Lindsay Davenport became the first players to book their places in round three but rain held up top seed Serena Williams

Surprise winner Zvonareva beat last years runner-up Patty Schnyder 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 and Davenport crushed Czech Daja Bedanova 6-1, 6-0 a player who she can struggle to beat on the hardcourts at times. William's clash with Dally Randriantefy was postponed until Wednesday.

Meghann Shaughnessy, the 11th seed, reached the second round, beating Milagros Sequera of Venezuela 6-2 6-4.

But Alexandra Stevenson, the number 17 seed, was a surprise loser on Tuesday as she lost out to Spanish doubles specialist Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-4 6-3. Mary Pierce contiunes her comeback with a straight sets win over Nicole Pratt of Australia.

Anna Kournikova's match was abandonned after two games with Kournikova leading 2-0 against clay court specialist Conchita Martinez and could turn out to be the match of the tournament.
