Both Venus and Serena Williams won their quarterfinal match by beating compatriots Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati. Kim Clijsters defeats Silvia Farina Elia and Justine Henin-Hardenne outplayed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Serena Williams was leading 8-4 in the head-to-head against Jennifer Capriati prior to the quarterfinal match of today. Capriati was leading 1-0 in playing on grass.

 

The number one in the ranking Serena Williams won her first game on love. Jennifer Capriati had to save two breakpoints and Williams hits a third breakpoints dropvolley into the net. Capriati managed to hold her serve and equalized 1-1.

 

Serena Williams hits a number of unforced errors and lets Capriati break voor 2-1. The veteran from Saddlebrook takes a 3-1 lead holding her own serve.

 

Serena Williams seems to have trouble with her timing but keeps her serve for 3-2. In the sixth game Capriati managed to win a great point after both players slipped but got the ball back in play untill Capriati oursmarts Williams with a well placed lob. 4-2.

 

At 0-40 Jennifer Capriati cant find a way to convert three breakpoints that she won with great returns. Williams fights her way back into the game with deuce after Capriati produced a miss hit. Still she can break Williams when the #1 hits two long balls for deuce. Two unforced netballs by Williams handed Capriati a good 5-2 lead in the first set.

 

Capriati finds a way to hold her serve and wins the first set 6-2.

 

In the sixth game of the second set Williams breaks for a 4-2 lead and holds her own serve to make it 5-2.

 

Williams is holding two setpoints on Capriati’s serve. One setpoint can be saved the second one goes to Williams when Capriati hits a ball wide and Serena equalized in sets 6-2 2-6.

 

In the first game of the third set Williams managed to wipe away a first breakpoint with her fifth ace, a second breakpoint with her sixth ace. Jennifers third breakpoint got lost when she hits an unforced error into the net. A solid serve by Williams and a bad return makes it deuce. Ace number seven secures advantage for Williams and the first gamepoint is won when Capriati makes an error with her return. 1-0.

 

Serena Williams breaks for a 2-0 lead, holds her serve and wins her seventh game in a row for 3-0 in the third set.

 

Capriati holds her serve but she cant keep up with Williams who takes a 5-3 lead. Serving for the match Williams faces two breakpoints. On 30-40 Capriati returns a second serve into the net. Williams missed a dropshot and hands Capriati a second breakpoint. Williams managed to hit a winner for deuce. The first service return from Capriati landed outside the court, matchpoint for Serena Williams. The last ralley of the match on matchpoint when Jennifer Capriati hits the net after some good saves. Serena Williams wins the third set and the match

2-6 6-2 6-3.
