Indonesian Angelique Widjaja beat Dinara Safina from Russia 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-5 on Wednesday and reach the quarterfinals of the Wismilak International in Bali Indonesia.

"It was a very good and tight game," said Widjaja "I needed this victory. It meant a lot because I haven't performed well this year." She is still looking for a second victory after she last won her first WTA tournament in 2001.

Third seed Conchita Martinez overcame a stomach upset and her fellow countrywoman Arantxa Parra in a 6-1 7-6 first round victory.

Martinez, who lost last year's final, was totally in charge against her compatriot in the first set but struggled in the second as she began to feel unwell.

With the help of the doctor Martinez managed to win the tie break and the match in the second set.

Chanda Rubin of the United States defeats Maria Sanchez Lorenzo from Spain 6-2 6-2 in her second round match and Russian Elena Dementieva had a good day at the office and 6-4 6-1 win over German qualifier Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Germany's Anca Barna beats eighth-seeded South Korean Cho Yoon-jeong 6-3 1-6 6-3 and Japans Saori Obata hammered Barbara Schett from Austria with 6-1 6-1 in their second round matches.
