Clijsters and Henin Struggle

The top half of the draw commenced on day 2 which saw the favourites all in action with a contrast in the results. The Women Singles Draw is hotting up and could become interesting or could it be too predictable?

Second day of competition saw defending champion and world number 1 Venus Williams beat Jane O'Donaghue 6-1, 6-1. The British youngster showed signs of becoming a huge tennis star in the future making smoe brilliant shots and placing the ball long into the corners forcing Venus into committing unforced errors.

Monica Seles, the fourth seed, progressed into the second round with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Eva Bes of Spain.
Seles, a Runner-up at Wimbledon in 1992, brushed past Bes in only 37 minutes.
Monica Seles has never won Wimbledon and with hints about her retirement at the end of the year she will want to win it more than ever before to complete the Grand Slam.

Justine Henin last years runner-up and Sixth seed struggled against Brie Rippner is through to the second round after defeating Rippner 6-2,6-7 (4-7) 6-1 in a match which lasted an hour and three-quarters.
She will face Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic in the second round.

Kim Clijsters, the fifth seeded Belgian, had to work hard to beat the 77th ranked American Samantha Reeves in a 90 minute first round match on Court 18.

Clijsters,who was quarter-finalist at The Championships last year, won 6-2 7-6 (7-5) and the tenacious play of Reeves meant that Clijsters had little chance of an easy victory. Clijsters also confirmed that her arm injury is still aggrevating her and will take scans after the tournament.
