Top seed Maria Sharapova had to fight hard to reach the quarterfinals of the DFS Classic tournament in Birmingham. She was forced to play 3 sets to beat Samantha Stosur of Australia. Losing the second set to the Australian Sharapova quickly set things straight beating Stosur 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
