Lewis wins the thrilling Canadian grand prix.

Lewis’s win was overshadowed by a truly horrific crash that was sustained by Robert Kubica, we are glad to know that Robert is ok, apart from a broken leg which will certainly keep him back for a number of races. While Lewis was leading Fernando was struggling, after the double world champion made a very ambitious move at the first corner, Alonso made the same mistake throughout the race.

There was accidents and incidents right the way through the seventy lap race, with the safety car came out a no less than six times! The major incident in the race was Robert Kubica’s accident on the seventeenth lap, which left the polish driver with a broken leg.

Just as the race began, Fernando Alonso made a stupid move round the outside of the other McLaren and BMW of Nick Heidfeld, and Fernando left the circuit and cit across the grass, possibly leaving the McLaren with damage to the floor of Fernando’s car. In a sense Fernando was lucky not to have collected by another passing car, sadly for Fernando this was just the start of his terrible grand prix.

Honda driver Jenson Button failed to start possibly due to a gearbox or clutch problem. Torro Rosso driver Scott Speed hit the back of Alexander Wurz’s Williams, the American retired with broken suspension, while the Austrian continued, although the collision with Speed left his rear wing broken.

Lap 15 saw Fernando making his second mistake at the first corner, which lost the Spaniard time, and third place which then left Felipe Massa to pick up the place. A couple of laps later, Robert Kubica hit the Toyota that was in front of him, the Bmw then speared off missing Speed’s parked Torro Rosso by a matter of inches, Kubica wasn’t so lucky as his F1.07 slammed very heavily into the concrete wall. Six laps later Adrian Sutil smashed into the wall at turn four, Fernando and McLaren reacted swiftly by bringing the champion in while the safety car was out, meanwhile upfront Lewis was calmly leading the race, waiting anxiously for the restart.

With 35 laps to go. David Coulthard ended his highly disappointing race, the Scotsman parking his car in the Red Bull garage for good. Two laps later, Nico Rosberg and Jarno Trulli both spun at the first corner, despite not hitting each other.

The drama didn’t stop there, a dozen laps later Chrsitijan Albers slammed into the wall, littering the track with yet more carbon fibre, something the remaining drivers didn’t need. It’s remarkable that no-one had a puncture, the marshals in Montreal undoubtedly doing a fantastic job today.

As if that wasn’t enough Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, and Renault driver Giancarlo Fisichella were black flagged as they exited the pit lane, as the red light was on, this promoted some of the smaller teams, and undoubtedly elevated Super Aguri to a higher points finish.

Just a lap after the well used safety car came in, Vitantonio Liuzzi crashed wrecking his suspension, and ending his race, after his car came into contact with the hugely famous wall of champions.

A few seconds after Jarno Trulli left the pit lane, his car came to a stop, the Italian hitting the wall, and completing the tally of drivers to have retired from this frantic and exciting Canadian grand prix.

The race finally died down, leaving ten laps of non safety car action, nevertheless the race wasn’t over yet. Takuma Sato wanted more points, he quickly passed Ralf Schumacher for 8th position, strangely Rubens Barrichello pitted when the race went green instead of pitting during the safety car, and this elevated Takuma to 7th position. As Fernando was struggling controlling his car, Takuma seized a fantastic 6th position, thrilling the crowd and the Super Aguri team.

The end result couldn’t be changed, Lewis Hamilton had kept his nerve, and his car in good condition, the twenty two year old showing maturity, and speed when it mattered, to cruise over the finish line and take his maiden grand prix victory, and more importantly, takes the lead in the world drivers championship, and is currently 8 points ahead of McLaren team mate Fernando Alonso. The brilliant result from the McLaren team now means they have a massive 28 point lead over the baffled Ferrari team.
