Brawn Tells Button "No McLaren Until 2010"

By Dan Nash
November 20 2009

Brawn GP have told Jenson Button he will not be allowed to do any McLaren work until the start of the 2010 season.

The revelation come after several weeks of to-ing, fro-ing and showboating between all parties involved which ended in Button signing a multi-year deal with McLaren earlier this week.

It seems that Brawn (soon to rebranded Mercedes GP) have taken offence to the way the new World Champion used a visit to McLaren's HQ as an apparent press opportunity to try and force more money out of Brawn. The public visit seems even more confusing given that Button has confirmed that Brawn offered more money than McLaren.

Brawn have hit back at what they see as disloyalty by Button by making it public that he is contractually obliged to Brawn GP till the end of 2009, and that they plan to enforce the contract.

This basically means that Button cannot work with McLaren at all until the end of 2009, presumably putting him at an even more disadvantage against Lewis next season.

it makes you wonder just what has been going on for the past few weeks. I'm even less convinced now that we know the whole story...

Like you, I think we are yet to hear all the gory details and possibly we never will.

Button said in an interview with Jake Humphreys on the BBC that he wouldn't comment on what Nick Fry and Ross Brawn are saying.
He genuinely seems to relish the coming challenge though.

And so he should good on him. Settled drivers of his age would jump ship for one of two teams, Macca and Ferrari so i dont blame him at all.

And loyalty give me a break, it may have been sold/rebranded but he has been in that factory for years.

3 years in a mclaren aged 29 after winning a WDC, thanks very much i'll take it where do i sign.

Wow, it's quiet here.

OK, you've just got going again.

Rather a contrast with RealBrawn, where there's a bit of turmoil going on at the moment.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hello. Being a Jenson supporter, I expect I'll be dropping by fairly often from now on.

I expect a large-scale Button-fan migration here over the next few months. Best of luck- It's good to have a Macca site, even if I do consider them the dark side!

I think it being an ill reward for Jenson's diplomacy and silence about the entire matter. I never held a high opinion of Fry, though.

Yep , your right - first post for me on this site.
It will be great to have Hamilton and Button fans all supporting each other. Can't wait for the season to start.

To be honest, I'm not surprised that BrawnGP are being so strict with their imbargo on Jenson and his existing contract. They see him as a real threat, especially considering the car he is going to have next season. They know that Lewis will be quick off the blocks and want to handicap Jenson as much as possible, this shows just how scared they are smiling smiley.

Hi Serrated

Have to admit I just thought that we were all going round in circles over at Brawn kicking something over that had already been kicked to death, plus the reported reaction from the team management was put the nail in the coffin for me. So its time to move on. Hall_Green_Wolf puts it well in an earlier post its many a drivers dream to drive for McLaren.

Of course it is and many of us were saying so a couple months ago when the rumours surfaced. Sure we hoped the Brawn GP dream would continue but they sold out. I don't blame them one bit. I don't think they should blame JB for making his own choices either though. Their reaction has been a little ungracious and amateur if you ask me.

Brawn should have signed JB halfway through the year. They didn't and they lost him. That's the end of it and I have no further interest in the team now that it is another manufacturer effort.

I see some familiar faces here.

As someone who's been a Honda and "powered by Honda" fan since I was a teen, I no longer really have a team to root for. Brawn was basically a Honda powered by a Merc, now it's full Merc. I'll be rooting for drivers now, and Jenson is one of my favorites. I think it was a brilliant move by Dennis and Whitmarsh to sign Jense...absolutely brilliant which will be rewarded big time.

Merc will rue the day they did not give Jenson a contract before or as the season ended.

Hadn't thought of that angle. I must admit that I've been a fair bit disappointed about this whole affair. I get the feeling that the Brawn management team were caught somewhat off guard by Jenson's move (which I agree is a bit amateurish) and found themselves between a rock and a hard place.

Here's hoping that Jenson will gel with the team and that he and Lewis can complement each other brilliantly.

I do wonder if there is a contract clause stipulating that Jenson will have to be clean shaven at any and all public appearances? As m00t put it: "For Pride! For England! For facial hair!"

Bring on 2010 \o/

Now who is good at doing that.

Step forward mr J Button.

I hope so too. Echoes of one Mr Prost I think. The rest would scamper away, destroy their tyres and wonder why Prost was in front by the end. It's well known that he who refuels later has the advantage. It will now be he who looks after his tyres better will pit last.

The 2009 Mclaren didn't have any particular tyre problems either which is hopeful. Lewis seemed to maintain his tyres OK through the races.

I think also the KERS teams may have an advantage of having a year of carting around that heavy KERS kit. They will know how the car behave with that sort of weight in tow.

Re: Brawn Tells Button "No McLaren Until 2010"
Posted by: darkstar (IP Logged)

Think it was just the weight distribution Ozzy, rather than the overall weight. They had to take out ballast to compensate for the KERS which left them with a problem since KERS could only be in the one place. It was harder for the KERS guys to get the balance right.

However, the fuel weight for 2010 sure is an issue. Couple that with thinner front tyres and brakes which aren't upgraded for the extra weight. Should be interesting (certainly at those circuits which are hard on brakes - and hot!).

I think Jenson made the right move though. Macca will be damned good at getting on top of these issues.

I'll take an occasional look back on the Brawn/Mercedes site, but my loyalties are with Jenson's new team. Big fan of Lewis too. 2010 is going to be massive!

I'm not sure that Brawn can tell button "No Mclaren..." I'm not a lawyer, but aren't contracts that prevent someone pursuing their trade generally unenforceable, restrictive practice...?
I suggest Button ignores Ross's ravings and if sued counter sues for constructive dismissal(Sm118)

Brawn seemed to not be happy that button had even spoken to McLaren saying it was a breach of contract and supposedly removing a high money offer, now that is restrictive practice and drivers speaking to other teams whatever next shame on them!!

Well with the stories doing the rounds in the press over Merc signing Schumacher and Eddie Jordan claiming he saw Brawn sound out Schumacher in Abu Dhabi Jenson could have a case for constructive dissmissal

Mate i have beaten Jensons drum all season on various forums and still do.

Jenson is an F1 survivor,he has raced the old school and has beaten the new crop, if he avoided a crash when driving 5hit cars he bought them home if only in last place lol.

I truly think macca has pulled a rabbit out of the hat, everyones a winner if you ask me for the next 3 years.

The bearded one looks after his car, is good at overtaking, has 5hagged some fit birds, and most of all is english, if he cant get on with lewis nobody will.

I love this guy! Been saying the same thing to anyone who'll listen on Jenson. I thought Brawn was doing a great thing getting Nico to pair with Jenson since they both have that smooth, mistake free style. But once I saw the story beyond the story, he had no choice but to go with McLaren, because the Mercedes honchos will be putting Schumacher in Button's rightful place. Talk about loyalty eh?

Nick Fry, Haug and Brawn will rue the day they let the true King of England go. Jenson will be there in next year's WDC....guaranteed.

Annoyingly for some people but not for me, Jenson is the best team mate Lewis can have, and Jenson aint stupid, he knows he has to be patient to get on par with Lewis. Jenson has won his championship and now just wants to race against the best, in the best car (in his opinion). Good luck to him.

Well said.

As I've stated elsewhere, I hope they're both neck in neck for a 1-2 every race. I honestly don't care who gets it, so long as we win.

What I DON'T want is what always happens with fanboys: They either start bashing the team because their boy isn't cutting the mustard, or the gloat like hell because their boy has the upper hand.

I don't want either. I just want the team to win. I don't care if it's the Price of Darkness himself at the wheel.

Like the Oakland Raiders motto: Just win, baby!

I'm hoping we have two drivers at the front working together in the garage so as the team has the best car on the grid.

I just like how Brawn wasn't happy with him speaking to another team, isn't that what your suppost to do when your contract is up, they had every chance in the season to resign him but didn't, I did like brawn but I think he got told by fry (who I don't rate) That no other team would come in for Jenson and so they decided to wait until the last minute and say to Jenson. "look this is the offer take it or leave it" But then Mclaren came in and he left and because of that They are throwing a tauntrum, I personally think they need a time-out or to be put in the corner to think about how they are behaving.

isn't that what your suppost to do when your contract is up, they had every chance in the season to resign him but didn't,

Maybe it is in Europe, but over here, it's illegal unless you get permission. Button was, in fact, under contract to Brawn. Brawn is paying him to race, not go out talking to everyone under the sun trying to get a better deal.

Over here, he would be heavily fined unless he got permission from Brawn to speak to other teams. At the same time, other teams, knowing that Jenson's contract is up, can ask Brawn for permission to talk to Jenson to offer a deal.

That's how it's supposed to work. Sadly, it's not the first time, nor the second even, that Jenson has done something similar. He's done it his entire career.

Why do you think you see press releases about teams saying, "It's OK to look elsewhere"? It's because they have no interest in keeping him to begin with, so they're not going to bother holding him back.

Parminio

At the end of the day there are two teams that most of the grid would relish the chance to drive for. I'm not saying that either of them present an easy ride, but to prove oneself in ether McLaren or Ferrari is a dream come true for most if not all drivers. Jenson has won the title now comes the challenge of driving for one of the most successful teams in F1 history.

I guess Brawn was pretty P'd off about his plan of Rosberg and Button not coming off. Fair enough. Fry was silly about the whole thing though and should have known better than to shoot his mouth off without allowing himself a cooling down period. He is senior management after all. The one who is supposed to be a hot head in this scenario, the F1 driver, handled it all with perfect grace and maturity.

If there were reasons why he wanted to leave Brawn rather than join Mclaren, I suspect they will stay tucked away for some time.
