Button: I have nothing to prove to Irvine

By Karl King
January 8 2010

McLaren's Jenson Button has refused to be drawn into any sort of war of words with Eddie Irvine over comments the Irishman made about Button's ability. The former racer suggested Button had been beaten by many of his previous team-mates and that Hamilton would not only beat him in 2010, but he would 'murder' him.

[If you haven't seen them, you can read Irvine's comments here]

When questioned on this issue by the press, however, Button insisted, "I'm not one for answering back, there's no point.

"The important thing is I'm confident in my ability, so I don't feel I need to prove anything to anyone."

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I might not agree with it, but everyone is entitled to it."

Jenson then went on to say that he believes having Hamilton as his team-mate will reduce the pressure upon him and allow him to perform better.

"It makes my life a lot easier because I'm in a much more relaxed position than people telling me I'm going to destroy my team-mate.

"I can just focus on doing the best job I can and getting the best out of myself and the best out of the team.

"I am here for myself and also for McLaren. People's comments don't change anything."

The quotes in this story were sourced from BBC Sport.

Irvine has made himself look bitter IMO. Well done jenson for not rising to the bait.

(Sm119) I know the reply appears somewhat childish, but why continue this unecessary attack on Jenson? I fully concur with peoples opinions regarding Jensons move being a one that might open up several avenues of debate, but to attack him in such a way just seems to cloud peoples want, to read your input.

Jenson has moved from a team where he had the comfort factor built in, to a team where he is the one who is the outsider. He fully understands the mighty task he has set himself and as someone who has proven to everyone that he is world championship material, wants to step it up one more gear and go up against Lewis, who he recognises and respects as the best package on the grid. Jenson was not signed by McLaren beacuse he is not a good driver, or one who will be happy to roll over into the No2 position, they signed him on his proven ability and believe me they know more about the drivers on the grid than we do.

Eddie Irvine has a right to his opinion but it is up to the individual to show wether or not it has any merit. Eddie has always been happy to be the first place looser on the grid so perhaps he has forgotten what it feels like to hunger for something better and bigger to go on your trophey shelf. Do you not think that we are better to wait until the end of the season to offer any judgement on anyone regarding their racing performance, just in case its not Jenson who fails to prove themselves. As far as I am concerned we, at McLaren, have the best driver line up on the grid and it will take time to exploite that partnership to its fullest.

Agreed, i was thrilled to bits when jenson was being touted with macca. I felt like the only person who was at the time. Everywhere you read it was just nasty digs about it.

Maybe they were scared?

Lewis and Jenson two english guys driving together is cosmic, even the wife is looking forward to next season lol.

Gone will be the b/s. If they have any issues they will simply say 'excuse me squire will yers step outside i need a word in your shell like' throw a couple of punches, agree they are both right, and go and have a beer.

Do racing drivers go round insisting they have something to prove? Especially to former drivers who have achieved less than them, who are having a pop at them because they need a bit of air time?

Ndesquise protests too much methinks! Maybe he is secretly thinking his main man Lewis is being threatened...(Sm100)

Sorry TVM!

This story has nothing 2 do with Lewis!

If 2 Time World Champion Fernando Alonzo didn’t shake Lewis! Why in the world would Lewis have any fear of Button?!!

My issue is…I just trip off of Button’s Attitude about him having nothing 2 prove!

Sure he doesn’t have 2 prove anything 2 Irvine!

But as the Reigning World Champion the world's focus will be on him!! He will have dig deep and not want 2 get blown away by any teammate! Agree?

Is that a “No Pressure Situation”??!!!

In all honesty I want Button 2 push Lewis! But I know it won’t happen!

Button’s attitude and confidence seems shaken and the season hasn’t even started!! (Sm55)

Just watch the episode of Top Gear! He’s already making excuses about being slower than Lewis!! (Sm103)

This has nothing 2 do about anything I said!! Just watch the episode!!

Button was making excuses the whole time!! And this was a “No Pressure Situation” on a silly TV show!!

Jenson has nothing to prove hes done everything hes set out to do in his career. His next challenge hes set himself is to see if he can do it in another team. If it doesnt work he can hang is helmet up and still be satisfied with what hes achieved. How can you tell Jensons confidence is shaken? your reading into something thats not there.

Nothing new with Eddie here, he seems to have the urge to make a comment every time something happens in F1. I get the impression that he just says something controversial because it gets him in the headlines (this is obviously an achievement he could not do any other way!). The sad thing is the press pick up on it.

Lewis is going to destroy Jenson. It's that simple. Jenson was never that good. Ever. If he was, he would have gotten a top ride by now. He never did. He got lucky and Brawn built him one hell of a car that simply couldn't be beat.

It really is that simple folks. If Jenson were going to amount to anything, he would have done it YEARS ago. He didn't.

People who think that Lewis is going to wipe the floor with Jenson, are the same people who were sure that Jenson didn't have a chance last year.

I wish I could thank them all personally. They helped me to get very good odds from the bookies, and supplement my meagre income. And now again, they've allowed me to get very acceptable odds for this year's WDC.

Some people will always take a superficial view, never look at the reasons why things happen, or don't happen. It's something I've learned to accept. Maybe when I was younger, I might have got upset about it.

I hope you are right Bill, I really do. Unlike some, I will wait and see. Remember it was an F1 elder and insider who called Button a concrete post just 12 months ago. What do we know. I think Button is a great driver, a brilliant driver and a good guy. I hope he can match Lewis.

My gut feeling is that Lewis will have the upper hand but that is just a gut feeling. I would be very happy to be wrong in 10 months time. I also hope your bet comes off. Not sure which is braver, last year or this but good on you.

Unlike some people though, I won't promounce the facts before they happen because I'm not a brain dead idiot.

You know as well as everyone else following any kind of motor sport that noone wins a WDC in F1 unless both the car, the team and the driver are up to it over an entire season. Had he not been up to it, he wouldn't have been crowned WDC in the end.

When the BGP001 was at its most competitive, Jenson was out on the track driving it like he stole it. When it didn't have as big an advantage, he still improved on his position in the races, though I'll concede that he sometimes underperformed in qualifying due to the enormous mental pressure he felt as a result of leading the championship. That said, I still think he did an outstanding job to bounce back like he did on race day in Brazil and I also think it shows you all you need to know about his resilience.

You don't rate Jenson -- I do. I don't think finishing 3rd behind the untouchable Ferraris in 2004 was a fluke. I don't think outscoring everyone else in the last races of 2006 was a fluke either. And I think his years with Ross Brawn and in particular the 2009 season will only have made him a better and more complete driver for 2010 and beyond.

In my books becoming a world champion does amount to something..

Anyway.. here is an interesting that Button is currently Nr.1 in the castrol world drivers rankings.

< LINK: Castrol World Drivers Rankings >

"Castrol Index Score: Each driver is given a score depending on his qualifying position and his race result from each event that counts towards the Castrol Rankings. Additional points are given for fastest lap in the race, leading the race or rally, leading the most laps, finishing on the lead lap, most positions gained, and starting the event."

well guys reading the tosh here has been very amusing .1 . jenson has 3 years too prove himself against lewis not 1 year .2 lewis has never driven an f1 car will full tanks and being notorius tyre killer lewis will struggle ,and if you dont understand why heres why lewis's driving style requires that he has a very loose rear end he has an old school technique that sees him almost power slide into every corner thats why he has been fast (untill now) if you slide you create undue tyre temp this is good for 5 laps but you destroy them quicker and with a full tank this only adds too the problem, also coupled with smaller front tyres over a race distance he will loose alot off time over a race distance. A complete new driving technique is needed here so i think lewis will learn more from jenson than vice a versa . Jenson however has NEVER been a quick driver over a single lap BUT his race craft is second too none his driving stye is a very balanced style and his ability under braking is VERY good ,however what will work in jensons favour this year is in having a balanced car (ie not biased too the rear as lewis percieves too be a balanced car ) is that over a race distance with full tanks jensons car will be in better shape than lewis's. Tyres will be freasher brakes ect so he can push alot harder look at last year his drives from 14th he has done that throuhout his f1 and formula ford days,One of the great overtakers lewis will find out that winning is not everything this year racecraft however is he will be faster over a single lap but behind on race pace .

Ah but Wayne, what you are forgetting is that people have been denouncing JB as s*** for a long time now, and have to keep insisting he is s*** as else they will be admitting they are wrong. - Which some on here really don't like doing.

But don't worry if he is able to beat Lewis over 3 more seasons it will just be 4 consecutive flash in the pans/lucky breaks. (sm100)

For what its worth I think Lewis will eb the best over the season, but Jenson won't be left trailing like some insist he will.

Owt wrong with not liking someone, but some of the arguments being broken out are pretty tenuous

There was always something about Lewis that I didn't like, his sense of entitlement, his Senna-esque helmet, his PR speak. Somewhere around mid season last year, I started to warm to him and now I am genuinely excited to see how him and JB fare this year and I would have thought that any F1 fan should be too. It's ok to change your mind about things, admit you were wrong even. I just get a bit bored with the bland who's best/who's better posting that goes on sometimes.

my suggestion is to ignore him. easier said than done unfortunately as i am the worst one to take my own advice.

as for jensen, well to tell the truth i have never really rated him but last year he did catch my attention with some very good drives.

he needs to be more aggressive and now is the time to show that. hamilton will be 'cojones out' to dispel any thoughts about the pecking order and i am afraid if jensen doesn't really respond in kind he may just get swamped. that doesn't mean that he must be a destroyer of tyres etc just take it head on and meet force with force.

Same here.

I have supported Jenson since his debut in F1.

It was good that a new British driver in the shape of Lewis came onto the scene but even though he won the WDC i never warmed to him as much as i did to Jenson.

As a supporter of all British drivers i was pleased to see Lewis win the WDC, but when Jenson won the title it meant much more to me.

This season i wil be supporting both men but i will always prefer Jenson leading a 1-2 finish for McLaren.
