Canada: McLaren make a conservitive start

The first two Practice sessions for this weekends Canadian Grand Prix got underway in warm weather with an unlikely chance of rain. Robert Kubica dominated both sessions in his BMW-Sauber, whilst Toyota’s Jarno Trulli was hit with more bad luck, ending the day early.
Friday – First Session
As ever the first session was lead by a string of third drivers, with Robert Kubica putting in a storming lap to finish almost two seconds clear of anyone else. Anthony Davidson and Alex Wurz ended the first session in second and third respectively. The fastest race driver was that of Michael Schumacher in fourth, whose Ferrari finished only a couple of tenths ahead of the two Honda’s lead by Rubens Barrichello.
Neither McLaren took part in the first season, with the team conserving engines and tyres for the Grand Prix on Sunday.
The only real incident was the departure of Tiago Monteiro who hit the famous ‘Champions Wall’ at the last corner.

Friday – Second Session
Like the first the second session was largely straight forward, with the only major worry being that of Toyota’s Jarno Trulli who completed seventeen laps but had to cut his session short after a gearbox problem. The unlucky Italian finished down in nineteenth out of twenty nine runners.
Once again Robert Kubica was fastest, but only by a tenth of a second. Fernando Alonso was second, with Alex Wurz putting in another good performance for BMW in third. McLaren were at opposite ends of the table with Kimi Raikkonen fourth and Juan Pablo Montoya seventeenth. Toro Rosso were the surprise of the session with Vitantonio Liuzzi ending the day eighth, and the Midland F1 of Christijan Albers who finished fourteenth.
