Collingwood Knock Aids England Victory

England claimed a 95-run victory after dismissing their opponents for 163 in reply to their total of 258 for nine.

Collingwood rescued England from a dismal start to their innings after captain Nasser Hussain decided to bat first on the fastest wicket in the world, hitting 100 off 127 balls after they had slipped to 122 for six.

Needing a good start in reply, the Sri Lankans instead mirrored England's efforts and slipped to 91 for five and despite useful innings from Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera, they were dismissed with 6.2 overs remaining.

Andrew Caddick claimed three for 20 in an unbroken 10-over spell with the new ball and was backed up by an equally impressive seven-over burst from James Anderson.

Caddick struck twice inside the first five overs to remove Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya in successive overs.

The Somerset fast bowler claimed his third wicket when Jehan Mubarak clipped straight to Hussain at mid-on before Anderson claimed the scalp of Kumar Sangakkara when he edged behind to Alec Stewart.

But perhaps the key wicket was that of Jayawardene's, who dominated a 45-run stand with Russel Arnold until Craig White struck to end his innings of 29 when he dug the ball in short and tempted him into fending off to Nick Knight at short leg.
