Alec Stewart has signalled his intention to step down from one-day international cricket after suggesting that England should pick younger players this summer.

Alec Stewart has signalled his
intention to step down from one-day international cricket after suggesting
that England should pick younger players this summer. The Surrey
wicket-keeper batsman has no plans to retire and intends to carry on
playing Test cricket but believes England need to start building for the
2007 World Cup. Two other senior centrally-contracted players, Nasser Hussain and
Andrew Caddick, have already announced their one-day international
retirement since returning from the World Cup. Stewart, who turned 40 last week, said: "I believe England should begin
their planning for the 2007 World Cup. "Therefore I hope the selectors will be looking at younger options this
summer in the one-day series. As a contracted England player, I am very
keen to continue my Test career. "Of course should I be selected for one-day internationals I will
continue to give my very best. "I still believe I am good enough to play both forms of the game for
England, but realistically I won't be around in 2007." England will this summer play a three-match one-day series against
Pakistan as well as competing in a three-nation tournament with Zimbabwe
and South Africa.
