Matthew Hoggard faces a fitness
test ahead of England's first Test against Zimbabwe at Lord's after
straining abdominal muscles in his left side. Hoggard suffered the injury in Yorkshire's Frizzell County Championship
Division Two match against Northamptonshire. Hoggard has undergone an ultrasound scan but the injury is healing and
his fitness will be reassessed after England practice on Tuesday. Hoggard batted during England's indoor practice, but did not bowl. But Lancashire all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is "very doubtful" for the
Zimbabwe game. Peter Gregory, the England and Wales Cricket Board's chief medical
officer, gave the verdict as Flintoff recovers from bruising and swelling
around the nerves within his right shoulder suffered last week. The injury continues to affect his right bowling arm and hand. The Surrey batsman Mark Butcher twisted his right ankle during
England's practice session, but the injury is not expected to keep him out
of the Test. |
