Marcus Trescothick suffered a small undisplaced fracture to the tip of his right index finger during England's first Test against South Africa.

Marcus Trescothick suffered a
small undisplaced fracture to the tip of his right index finger during
England's first Test against South Africa. He was taken to hospital for an X-ray and then returned to Edgbaston to
receive further ice treatment on the injury. England plan to re-assess Trescothick's condition on Friday and no
decision has yet been made about whether he is fit enough to bat in the
Test, but as a precaution he has already been ruled out of fielding again
during South Africa's innings. Trescothick will be allowed to take his place as opener if he is
regarded as fit enough to bat because under the International Cricket
Council's playing conditions for Test matches, he does not have to make up
the time he is absent from the field as his injury is regarded as
external.
