England Take Honours on Rain Ruined Day

Play ended early in Dhaka because of bad light with Bangladesh in trouble on 24 for two after 15 overs.

The start to the inaugural series was ruined after less than 20 minutes' play in the morning session when torrential rain caused a six-hour delay with Bangladesh on one without loss after four overs.

But the time spent waiting to begin playing again did not seem to affect Harmison, who struck with the second ball of his third over after the re-start to remove opener Javed Omar.

Digging the ball in short, Harmison got encouraging lift from the wicket and the ball ballooned off the shoulder of Javed's bat and looped straight to the safe hands of Rikki Clarke at gully.

Harmison could have claimed a second victim three balls later when fellow opener Hannan Sarkar shouldered arms to a full-length delivery which jagged back sharply and hit him on the pads but Sri Lanka umpire Asoka de Silva rejected England's loud appeals.

The Durham paceman did not have to wait long to claim his second success.

Four overs later Habibul Bashar slashed at a full delivery outside off-stump and was well caught by Marcus Trescothick at first slip to leave Bangladesh on 24 for two with nine overs of the opening day remaining.

But bad light heralded an early close to leave Harmison with figures of two for nine.
