Continuing the season review of Tottenham Hotpsur in 2006/07. Part two covers the month of September. We travelled to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United, and to Anfield to test ourselves against the might of Liverpool. This was also the month that the passports came out for the first time since 1999 as Spurs and their hordes of travelling supporters went to Prague.

Part 2. September.
Saturday 9th September 2006. Manchester United (Away).
Another 5.15pm kick off and another defeat in the North West. United took the lead after 9 minutes when Robinson failed to clear a 35 yard free kick. The Spurs keeper could only parry it straight back into the penalty box and Ryan Giggs was the first to react and headed the ball into the back of the net. Tottenham did rally and produce some decent football but could not find the breakthrough. Defoe and Mido went close towards the end of the match but it was not to be.
Spurs performance rating: 5/10
Entertainment rating: 4/10.
Thursday 14th September 2006. Slavia Prague (Away).
The game that so many supporters were looking forward to, Tottenham's first back in European competition since 1999. The game saw Spurs take to the field in their new ‘chocolate and gold' third kit for this momentous match. The game itself did not live up to the hype with the only goal of the game coming in the 37th minute. Jemaine Jenas received the ball just right of centre and 40 yards out. He took a couple of touches before unleashing and unerring shot which hit the back of the net low to the keepers right. Keane should have added to the Tottenham tally late on but the Prague goalkeeper got the better of their one on one.
Spurs performance rating: 5/10
Entertainment rating: 3/10.
Sunday 17th September 2006. Fulham (Home).
Spurs left their shooting boots back in the dressing room for this one. A dire performance as Fulham came for a point and Spurs did not have the where with all to break them down. Mido hit a post and that was about it. Dismal, dismal stuff and the poor start continued.
Spurs performance rating: 2/10
Entertainment rating: 1/10
Saturday 23rd September 2006. Liverpool (Away).
An early start for the away supporters as this one kicked off at 12.45. Cheers Sky. Played in bright sunshine Spurs should have taken the lead through Ledley King in the first half but his header went over the bar. A cagey first half gave way to a frantic second and the first opportunity fell Tottenham's way. A lung busting run from Edgar Davids saw his cross fall to the unmarked Jenas six yards out. As the Spurs midfielder stretched to poke the ball into an open net he somehow got it horribly wrong and his effort went wide. Barely had the Spurs supporters had time to comprehend this miss when Gonzalez gave Liverpool the lead in the 63rd minute, putting in a shot from Steven Gerrard which had rebounded off the Spurs post. Ten minutes later and it was 2-0. Dirk Kuyt lashing home from 17 yards. Risse rounded off the match with a left foot thunderbolt a minute from time and Tottenham's poor start to the season continued.
Spurs performance rating: 5/10
Entertainment rating 7/10
Thursday 28th September 2006. Slavia Prague (Home).
Once again Spurs failed to ignite in front of their own supporters as they made heavy weather of the Czech side. Prague never really bothered Robinson in the Spurs goal but the same could be said at the other end. A nervy, disjointed performance was eventually put to bed in the 80th minute when Robbie Keane when he received a chested pass on the edge of the box from Ghaly. Keane shifted the ball a yard to his right before fizzing a low shot into the bottom left hand corner. Spurs could of, and should of, extended the lead but once again they failed in front of goal. No matter, job done, and Tottenham were through to the group stages of the UEFA Cup.
Spurs performance rating: 5/10
Entertainment rating: 3/10.
Next up, part 3. October.
