Getting Ramos does not prove Spurs are a big club. It proves that the board are prepared to pay through the nose for wages though. If Tottenham were a truly 'big' club in the current climate then Ramos would have wanted to come regardless of how much money was being thrown at him.

And whilst we are at it perhaps you could define what constitutes a 'big club'?

Does having lots of money constitute a 'big club'?

Or is it winning things? Or maybe having a large support? Or being in Europe every year? Or having a team made up of International superstars? I would be interested to know what you think constitutes a 'big club' other than appointing a Spanish coach who has had 12 coaching jobs in 13 years.

To say that Sevilla are a smaller club than Spurs at this given moment in time is quite an insult to the Spaniards. Yoy are saying that the team that finished 3rd in La Liga, and has won back to back UEFA cups, and a Super Cup are a smaller club than Spurs at the moment? Thats interesting.

Certainly Tottenham's history is the richer of the two over the last 100 years but the two clubs recent histories does not bear comparison.

And I am pretty sure that Ramos has been given assurances by the board before he signed on the dotted line. What assurances you are alluring to though is not clear as you declined to mention them. I can only assume that you are referring to assurances in the vein of transfer funds and the such.

So despite the title of the piece there is no actual justification within the article to suggest that Spurs are a big club despite the fact that you say so.

Glenda, with someone like yourself that has so many opinions, I would have thought that having the opportunity to write them down and send them out into the world for all to read would have been a God send but you have let yourself down with this piece of fluff. It's short and it says nothing. It's all 'maybes' and 'time will tells'. Say what you think. You have a podium, you have the floor, speak your mind. You were, and still are, quite vocal on the subject of Ramos' predecessor. How about setting some of us straight on that subject. Where did it go wrong for Jol. What were his mistakes. Why did he get the sack in your opinion?

That, more so than this 'interest-free fluff' would be worth a read.

Matt- I was asked by Jimmy to write a piece to keep the board going. I do not write as quickly as you. So that is what I came up with given the time available.

A big club can be a club with potential, a sleeping giant. Blackburn had a lot of money at one time and won the league but that was it. Tottenham have history, money, and London going for them. I could have put "the potential to be a big club, but it could be said they are one and the same.

I think Spurs have the same potential that Arsenal had before the Wenger era

Getting Ramos has elevated the clubs standing IMO. It has been reported that he has become the highest paid manager in the world [ that may or may not be true}, That in itself would be significant IMO. As for assurances that were given I can only guess, maybe transfer funds and wage structure.

Regarding Jol I think that has been covered. I though of him how you probably thought of Sven and maybe McClaren.

I doubt that.

Fleetness of fingers of the type should not be an excuse. Writing something is easy. Making it readable is not. I applaud your efforts regardless Glenda and hope that you continue to write something for this board on a regular basis, I truly do.

And the more you write, the quicker you will get and the better it will be written.

This a ludicrous statement. The world of football has changed so much. The big four are so much further ahead of us than they were for arsenal (who had won the league under graham only a few years before wenger took over) so were probably in the "big four" or whatever it was called then.

Glenda, Ramos coming does not show us to be a big club, qualifying for the uefa cup through the league, 2 years in a row, showed we were moving in the right direction, but the board sought to ruin all the good work our wonderful ex manager had done. If at the end of next season Ramos has won a cup or finished fourth then he can be considered a success and show we are a "big" club but until then we are behind where we were with BMJ in charge.

Interesting article the best thing on this board for weeks. We should have moved years ago that is down to the board. When we can attract players of the calibre of Ramos we will be a big club.

I do wonder about Ramos tho.
His next career step should have been to a CL club.

Instead he chose a club that was going to have a fight to stay in the uefa cup qualification places, and that is before Levy hit the destruct button.

Probably because this contract makes him financially secure for life. He is so grateful, he will agree with any of Comolli's ideas. We have secured a yes man imo.

Anyone who is not a Comolli purchase better watch out. And dont think scoring every game is going to save your neck Keane.

a big club,because we are a big club whether Ramos wanted
to come or not.

And i dont think its about money alone because his stock
has risen with his achievements at seville,so he was a
manager in demand,be it here spain or italy so his next
contract away from seville would have been huge anyway.i
reckon the reason he said he was offered a "dizzying"offer
was to apease the seville fans for leaving them halfway
through a campaign.

I believe him when he says it was his ambition to manage in
the prem,and he realises we are one of the few clubs with
the resources and hopefully ambition to challenge for the
top prizes,which is why he left a squad of very good players
behind that were challenging on all fronts after obviously
been given an ultimatum by levy.

Leaving all that behind can only be a good sign of how much
he wanted to come to us.

Lets hope juandes is the man,so far so good..

To be fair the competition wasn't too hot though was it.

In fact the competition was erm...nothing.

Ramos would succeed at managing virtually any national team in world football except usa. where buisiness takes priority over action on the pitch.

I agree with ebrule. Partly the challenge, but more the money. As for the `big club` thing, It`s all a matter of perpective. The top 5-10 club sides in the world and their fans don`t consider Spurs a big club. But to any other club side ,say outside the EPL, they are considered a big club.

Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, there’s only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.

i agree with pioneer. Ramos came for the challenge. He knows his capabilities, and he wants to prove them in the lime-lite that is the premiership. What better place to be noticed? Ok, he has massive achievements behind him with his UEFA cup double and all, but that is unfortunately Channel 5 territory!!! He see's Spuds (as pioneer rightly said) as a club with all the resources for him to fine tune for greater success than the current generation of (you) Spuds can remember, and make himself look gooood in the process!!! Fair play to him. And good luck trying to catch up!! heheh (i can afford to get cocky this season at least!!).
