Spurs news: Back to the Future....

I was brought up on the almost mythical 1960’s double winning team….The word Greaves could not be mentioned without my Dad and Grandad having a wry faraway grin on their face. I could never work it out as a kid…It’s only football after all. So what’s changed?

Cynics might say that this has been the worse period in our history in terms of things to celebrate. Where’s the Glory Glory now? Well, part of supporting a team is the combination of the past and the future. As for the present…if we lose a game, there’s always next week. If we fail to sign the big names, well there’s always the next transfer window. Supporting any team is a mixture of optimism and pessimism really. I first saw Spurs play in the era of Hoddle and Ardiles….It’s never going to be as good again in my eyes…Even if we were to win the Champions League…I will still look back at the early 80’s with astonishing pride. Everything about us back then oozed style and class, and we’ve never looked like emulating it. Our history is astonishing….we have been the first team, to do so many things, and I won’t reel of the list now…we all know it off by heart…

We are rightly proud of the history, and deep down, we know that everyone else is aware of it….for a team that is “No longer big”, we dominate the gutter press during every pre-season. We can’t live on past glories however, and up until recently, there has been nothing much to smile about….but I’m genuinely excited about us again for the first time in many years. We may not have the biggest ground, the best fans, or the best team….but what we do have is the genuine belief that the glory days will return. We’ve all seen the flickering black and white films of Billy Nic’s team. We’ve seen the pride on the faces of the players and the fans back then. We made history, and earned our rightful place in the history books for all time.

Now the revolution is well under way, we all know deep down that this is the closest we have ever got to getting back to those days, and there is one thing that will ensure we achieve it above all other’s. The pride we all have in our club. The players this season, the management team, and the supporters are for once showing the kind of spirit that we had back in those glory years. No matter what anyone else says about us, we all know it’s coming, we all know it may take a few years, but it will happen again. A few of us have made a point that is worth repeating. You cannot buy your way to glory. Remember the early days of Man utd, when the core of their team was kids….Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt and the Nevilles….We have an equally youthful, and maybe even more promising set up. That’s not to say success is guaranteed, but we stand a better chance than most.

So….the next time we have a game, just five minutes before we kick off……just spend a few minutes of meditation. Think back to all those glory days…think of Billy Nic, Gazza, Lineker, Greaves, Hoddle , Ardiles, Blanchflower, Jennings….Think of the black and white images, think of those ribbons around the cup….smell the atmosphere at the Lane..Then take a few minutes thinking about what we have now….and what it might become……..Savour every minute, this might just be the start of something special, and you will want to remember every glorious minute.
