10-man Nomads deny Druids derby win

MATCH REPORT:

Druids are still searching for their first ever league win over local rivals Connah's Quay Nomads, despite the visitors being reduced to 10 men in the 2nd half, when midfielder Paul Mazzarella was sent off for a second bookable defence.

The first half was a poor spectacle with neither side having a firm grip on the game. Despite an excellent playing surface the play was still poor, with the ball being in the air for the majority of the half. There were few notable goalbound efforts, but there was some contraversy when  match referee, Mr CW Bodenham of Knighton, booked Nomad's left winger Paul Mazzerella for questioning a free-kick that had been awarded for Druids.

Thankfully, the 2nd half was a far better showing with Druids showing more urgency to break down a strong Nomad's defence. The first real chance of the game came on 47 minutes, when Flexsys rattled David Walsh's crossbar after a goal mouth scramble. The 'Ancients' continued to press forward at every opportunity, and substitute striker James Pierce was unlucky to see his powerful header fly straight into Walsh's hands. Nomads were still looking dangerous on the counter-attack and had it not been for a few questionable offside decisions they could well have sneaked a vital goal.

With just over 10 minutes to go Nomad's were reduced to 10 men when Mazzerella went in late for his second bookable offence to the anger of the visiting supporters. Quay quickly changed things round, with top scorer Tommy Mutton being replaced by ex- Wrexham midfielder Andy Griffith in an attempt to hold on for a point. This decision proved successful as Nomad's held on for a creditable goaless draw.

                                Cwmbran  0 - 2  Afan Lido

Meanwhile, down South, the other Friday night fixture saw Cwmbran take on Afan Lido. Both Lido and Cwmbran have got off to impressive starts to the season, but it is Afan Lido who leapfrog Cwmbran into 3rd place after tonight's result.
