Points shared between Caerws and Cwmbran

In a fast and furious game at the Recreation Ground tonight Caersws ended up
sharing the points with visitors Cwmbran Town, drawing one-all.

The home team opened the stronger of the two, in the first few minutes Kevin
Scott had a corner kick bounce off the bar, then had a free-kick from just
outside the Cwmbran area held low by keeper Marty Ellacott following a foul
on Ross Stephens. Minutes later Scott sent in a great cross from the left,
but no Caersws player was able to get to it. On 12 minutes Graham Evans
tried an overhead kick from a right wing cross, but his effort went narrowly
over. A few minutes later Colin Reynolds saw his 16-yard drive go narrowly
wide of the post with the keeper well beaten.

Cwmbran opened the scoring against the run of play on 17 minutes when Jodie
Jenkins won the ball on the half-way line and fed it to sub Mattie Davies
who finished clinically, shooting over the advancing keeper Andy Mulliner.

Caersws retaliated on 20 minutes when a corner kick by Kevin Scott on the
left was met by Colin Reynolds, whose powerful header was cleared off the
line by defender Mike Pattimore, with keeper Ellacott beaten. Caersws got
their deserved equaliser after 25 minutes when, following a scramble in the
Cwmbran goalmouth with several goal-bound shots being blocked, the ball
eventually fell to Graham Evans who thundered a shot into the back of the
net from 10 yards.

Caersws dominated the rest of the half, but Cwmbran had an opportunity to
regain the lead on 32 minutes when Mattie Davies shot wide from 16 yards
following a right wing corner. A minute later Ross Stephens put in a
tight-angled cross from the near the post was pushed onto the post by Marty
Ellacott, with the rebound being put in the side net and the referee giving
off-side against Stephens.

Cwmbran penned the Blues back for long periods of the second half, making
the game much more even. Mattie Davies missed a glorious chance to put the
visitors back in the lead when he somehow shot wide from 10 yard on 50
minutes. Two minutes later Graham Evans' 10 yard low shot was well saved by
Ellacott. The ever-threatening Mattie Davies then hit the post, with the
rebound being cleared at the expense of a corner by the Caersws defence.
Cwmbran continued to look dangerous, and on 83 minutes Anthony Wright fed
the ball to defender Jason Welsh, who somehow shot wide from 6 yards.
Caersws sub Jamie Davies then shot across the face of the goal, the ball
going out just pass the far post on 88 minutes, and in the final minute
Jodie Jenkins fed Anthony Wright who headed over from close range.

This was very exciting game, even for the neutrals present, with end-to-end
football being played at a blisteringly fast pace. On first half performance
Caersws deserved three points, but in the end a draw was not an unfair
result, the single point being enough to earn the Bluebirds a place one step
further up the table.
