Here is tonight's only Welsh Premier result and match report. Cwmbran claimed a vital 3 points against Newtown to return to 8th palce, and a step closer to Premier Cup football next season.

MATCH REPORT:

Cwmbran returned to the all important 8th spot in the Welsh Premier table, with a battling victory against visitors Newtown.

Sean Mainwaring gave Cwmbran a deserved first half lead after 39-minutes. A ball across the area from striker Jason Welsh found Mainwaring, and he calmly slotted home from the penalty spot.

Newtown didn't get going at the start of the second half, and found themselves 2-0 down after 49-minutes. A fine run and cross from Richard Carter found the head of Chris Summers who headed home from close range.

Summers should have buried the game shortly after, when Newtown goalkeeper Gary Haman misjudged a header outside his area. Summers picked up the loose ball, and inexplicably scuffed his shot wide from 6-yards with just a defender on the line to beat.

Newtown fought their way back and missed a couple of simple chances of their own. Mark Williams blasted over when it looked easier to score, likewise Jamie Edwards.

Marty Ellacott suffered a nervous moment when a Newtown long punt towards goal caused him to collide with his post, but he recovered in time to scramble the ball away from goal with attackers bearing down on him.

Newtown got the break they deserved on 80-minutes, with Neil Smothers handling inside the area. No complaints from any of the Cwmbran players with the decision, and Chris Adamson comfortably sent Ellacott the wrong way from the spot.

Cwmbran held on for the last 10-minutes, and the recent good form continues. Hopefully a win at Haverfordwest on Saturday can secure 8th place, or even 7th if Afan Lido fail to win at Connah's Quay.
