Welshpool boosted by Neath Rejection

Welshpool Town have been boosted by the news that the Welsh League runners-up, Neath, have been refused entry into the Welsh Premier League. Their application to groundshare with Port Talbot has been rejected by the League's officials due to the arrangement not being submitted in time

Welshpool Town chairman Steve Hughes will plead with league officials to make a ‘logical, financial and practical’ decision at the Welsh Premier's annual meeting this Saturday in Aberystwyth. Hughes claims that the other league clubs would suffer financially if the league were to operate with just 17 sides next season. He told the 'Powys County Times', "Welshpool Town has spent £20,000 on achieving its Welsh Premier status and we greatly enjoyed the challenges of the season. We were well received and professional hosts. At the moment we are developing plans to build our own stadium that will comply with UEFA standards. 

Hughes added, "With one less team in next season’s Welsh Premier, each club stands to lose £1,500 at least in lost revenue and that adds up to £25,000 for the entire league over a season. This is extra money any potential new sponsor would have to provide if they were to show an interest in backing the league."

It is believed that 13 of the 17 Welsh Premier clubs have already backed Welshpool's cause despite the League's new ruling that 2 clubs would be relegated regardless of how many sides were promoted. This could well be enough to persuade Welsh Premier secretary John Deakin that the mid-Wales club deserve to remain in the top tier of the Welsh Premier.
